Sky Sports Pundit, Jamie Carragher, has labelled Arsenal’s club statement as ‘over the top’, with the Gunners releasing a club statement in relation to Mikel Arteta’s VAR outburst after a 1-0 defeat to Newcastle.

Arsenal released a statement earlier on this afternoon, where the club supported Mikel Arteta’s comments following a controversial 1-0 defeat to Newcastle.

Arsenal’s statement read: “Arsenal Football Club wholeheartedly supports Mikel Arteta’s post-match comments after yet more unacceptable refereeing and VAR errors on Saturday evening.

We’d also like to acknowledge the huge effort and performance from our players and travelling supporters at St James’ Park.

The Premier League is the best league in the world with the best players, coaches and supporters, all of whom deserve better. PGMOL urgently needs to address the standard of officiating and focus on action which moves us all on from retrospective analysis, attempted explanations and apologies.

We support the ongoing efforts of Chief Refereeing Officer, Howard Webb and would welcome working together to achieve the world-class officiating standards our league demands.”

Anthony Gordon’s 68th minute goal was enough to secure all three-points for the Magpies and hand Arsenal their first league defeat this season.

The goal caused controversy across the footballing world after VAR checked for: offside, handball, a foul and the ball going out of play.

Jamie Carragher, former Liverpool defender, has slammed Arsenal for their statement and labelled the decision as ‘over the top’.

Carragher said: “I’ve just seen Arsenal have put a statement out, i don’t really agree with that… I covered the game last night and on the back of Mikel Arteta’s interview i said that i loved it. I loved the fact Mikel Arteta was passionate but I didn’t agree with what he said.”

“I am scratching my head and wondering what Mikel Arteta and Arsenal are actually unhappy about with that goal.”

Carragher also revealed that he disagreed with a similar situation that his former side, Liverpool, were in a few weeks ago. After the Reds released a statement following their 1-0 defeat to Spurs.
