Mikel Arteta labelled Thomas Partey’s injury setback – which will be his eighth spell on the sidelines since joining in 2020/21 – as a ‘big concern.’

By the time he returns to action, which is expected to be around mid-December or early January in the worst case scenario, Partey will be jetting off to Côte d’Ivoire for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.

Having been ruled out since the Gunners travelled to Sevilla towards the end of October, Partey could end up missing as many as 12 games if his four-to-six week recovery timeframe is accurate.

That could well bring his total games missed for Arsenal above 60.

Whether Arsenal will view this as the potential final straw remains to be seen, particularly having made significant efforts to convince him to stay over the summer.

Partey, who turns 31 this year, has undoubtedly proven himself to be one of the smoothest midfield operators in the Premier League in recent seasons, but his unreliability when it comes to fitness has often cost them dearly.

Declan Rice’s arrival has certainly eased, what was on more than one occasion, dire circumstances in midfield with options spread alarmingly thin.

Recent Arsenal transfer news also suggests that the club are still not content with their current options in the middle of the park. The likes of long-term target Douglas Luiz, Real Sociedad’s Martín Zubimendi and Real Madrid’s Aurélien Tchouaméni have begun to surface on the rumour mill once more.

Partey would still likely command a figure of around £35m-£40m, which may free up funds for the Gunners to continue their midfield revamp this winter.

Juventus have made no secret of their admiration for Partey in the past, and with Paul Pogba now facing a lengthy ban following doping offences, the Arsenal midfielder has become even more desirable.

Neil Roarty, Betting Expert at SportsLens, said: “Thomas Partey has no doubt been an exceptional servant for Arsenal, but cashing in on an ageing, injury prone player makes total sense.

“The January window has become much more flexible than it used to be in terms of big-money deals, and now with the full backing of the board, Mikel Arteta and director Edu can surely find a suitable replacement.”
