‘The Welsh Wizard’, Joe Cordina, is widely regarded as one of the best super-featherweights in the world, and here at SportsLens we have decided to take a deep dive into Joe Cordina’s record.
Joe Cordina Record
Joe Cordina made a successful first defence of his IBF World Super-Featherweight Title on November 4th, progressing to 17-0 as a professional. ‘The Welsh Wizard’ was odds on with the best boxing betting sites to win, and didn’t disappoint as he secured yet another world class win.
Cordina was meant to be making yet another defence of his IBF world 130-pound strap against Belfast’s Anthony Cacace on the Tyson Fury vs Oleksandr Usyk undercard in Saudi Arabia on February 17th.
However, now that fight has been postponed, the fight will most likely not go ahead. Cordina was the favourite with UK betting sites to have his hand raised for the 18th time as a pro.
Up to now in his professional career, ‘The Welsh Wizard’ has barely put a foot wrong. In his 17 professional fights to date, the Welshman has had his hand raised on each and every occasion. Not only that, but Cordina is already a two-time world super-featherweight champion, as well as being one of the best 130-pound fighters in the world.
Of those 17 victories, the British super-featherweight has finished nine of his opponents inside the scheduled distance. Cordina made his professional debut back in April 2017, winning his first seven fights as a pro before claiming his first belt. He beat Sean Dodd via unanimous decision to go to 8-0, claiming the Commonwealth Lightweight Title in the process.
A fight later, two years after making his pro debut, Cordina added the British Lightweight Title to his trophy cabinet in April 2019. The 1991-born Cardiff boxing phenom beat Andy Townsend via knockout in Round 6 of their contest. Next up for Cordina was an all-Welsh affair with Gavin Gwynne.

The Gwynne fight was one that was expected to be incredibly tough for Cordina. However, ‘The Welsh Wizard’ passed that test with flying colours to put it one way or another. Cordina successfully defended his British & Commonwealth Lightweight Titles, before then moving down a weight to 130-pounds to campaign at super-featherweight.
Cordina has four fights at super-featherweight to get used to his new weight division, before landing his maiden world title shot against Kenichi Ogawa in June 2022. Ogawa was the reigning champion, and came over to Cardiff as the favourite with the best boxing betting sites to hand Cordina the first defeat of his career.
Cordina’s toughest test ended up being his most emphatic and incredible performance. It took just two rounds for ‘The Welsh Wizard’ to become world champion after knocking the champion out cold in Round 2. At the first time of asking, Joe Cordina became world champion in the most devastating of fashions.
However, just weeks after becoming world champion, the Cardiff man was stripped of his world title due to underdoing long-term hand surgery. This meant fellow Brit Zelfa Barrett fought Shavkatdzhon Rakhimov for the vacant title. The Tajikistan fighter won the fight, before then facing Cordina in April 2022.

The fight against Rakhimov was an absolute cracker. Cordina ended up winning the fight via split decision, dropping Rakhimov early on in the fight before getting the better of the champion on points.
Cordina became a two-time world super-featherweight champion earlier this year, before then making a successful first defence last time out in Monte Carlo, Monaco against Edward Vazquez. Although the fight was relatively close, the superior speed, timing and class of ‘The Welsh Wizard’ was apparent, prevailing by unanimous decision.

There are some potentially huge fights on the horizon for Joe Cordina at 130-pounds in 2024. Unifications with the likes of O’Shaquie Foster and Emanuel Navarrete are compelling fights, as well as an all-British clash with Nottingham’s Leigh Wood – who has vacated his title at featherweight and since moved up to super-feather.
