Manchester United legend Roy Keane has slammed Bruno Fernandes, claiming he’s the ‘opposite’ of what he’d want in a captain, and has urged manager Erik ten Hag to strip the midfielder of the club’s captaincy.
Manchester United fell to a disappointing defeat in the Manchester derby on Sunday afternoon, as City ran riot at Old Trafford – comfortably triumphing 3-0 thanks to Erling Haaland’s brace and a second half Phil Foden goal.
It brought to an end a three game winning streak for the Red Devils, providing a platform for pundits to highlight the issues within the club from top to bottom in post match analysis.
While Gary Neville was outspoken on the ownership of the club, and criticised Brazilian winger Antony, Keane slammed Fernandes and urged Ten Hag to strip the Portugal international of his captaincy.
Ten Hag only made Fernandes captain over the summer, stripping Harry Maguire of the role, but Keane thinks the Dutchman should should hold his hands up and admit that it was the wrong decision.
“He is a talented player no doubt about it. But what I saw today – we’ve discussed many times before, it was at Liverpool last year – his whinging, his moaning and throwing his arms up in the air constantly,” Keane said on Sky Sports.
“It really isn’t acceptable. From what we saw, I’m thinking I would take that [captaincy] off him.
“You have to start somewhere. You were talking about where do you make changes – board level, the manager? I would start with that because the manager is capable of doing that, and hold his hands up and say ‘listen, I’ve got it wrong’.
“Fernandes is a brilliant footballer but in terms of captain material he is the opposite to what I would want in a captain.”
