Arsenal Edge Out Sevilla In Tight Contest

Mikel Arteta’s side came into the game in a bid to return to winning ways in Europe after their disappointing 2-1 loss to Lens on Matchday 2. They did a good job against a rejuvenated Sevilla side who were looking to build on their unbeaten Champions League campaign so far.

The Gunners eventually made the breakthrough just before half time as Martinelli marked his debut in the competition with a sublime goal. In a swift counter-attacking move, Jesus turned brilliantly before slotting his fellow Brazilian through, leaving the winger to run through on goal before rounding the goalkeeper and finishing cooly.

Arsenal doubled their lead shortly after the break and it was yet another brilliant goal. This time it was Jesus who got on the scoresheet after good work down the left hand side before cutting onto his favourite right foot and curling an effort beyond the helpless Orjan Nyland.

However, the La Liga side were determined to not go out without a fight and pulled one back just a few minutes later. Nemanja Gudelj rose highest of them all to nod home a delightful Ivan Rakitic corner, setting the game up for a tense ending.

Despite their efforts and a couple of late chances, Sevilla could not find an equaliser. Diego Alonso’s side came close in the closing stages but it wasn’t enough and the Gunners were victorious.

Arteta’s side were in need of all three points and thanks to goals from their Brazilian stars it is exactly what they got. Jesus assisting Martinelli for the opener was the first time that two Brazilians have combined for a goal in the competition.

With a goal and assist on the night for Jesus, the 26-year-old kept up his impressive record in the top level of European football. With 14 goals and four assists, he has been involved in 18 goals in his last 17 starts.
