Manchester City held on to claim an important 2-1 win against Brighton at the Etihad Stadium, reclaiming top spot for at least a few hours.

Julian Alvarez continued his run of impressive form to open the scoring inside ten minutes, bagging a seventh goal of the season and fourth of the current Premier League campaign.

Before the 20 minute mark, Erling Haaland was back amongst the goals to end his almost month-long drought for Pep Guardiola’s side – his ninth in the league in as many outings.

Since the start of last season, Alvarez has scored 24 goals for City in all competitions – bettered only by his partner in crime Haaland with 60.

Barcelona loanee Ansu Fati got one back for the visitors with 15 minutes to play but it was too little to late for Roberto De Zerbi’s men who have now failed to win in each of their last five in all competitions.

The Sky Blues bounced back from consecutive league defeats at the hands of Wolves and Arsenal prior to the international break, with a strong response today of the utmost importance as they bid to defend their crown once again.

Liverpool took top spot for a brief period earlier today following their 2-0 Merseyside derby triumph over Everton and City’s spell may also be short-lived if Arsenal can beat Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

According to Premier League betting sites, City remain odds-on favourites to win what would be a fourth title in a row – which hasn’t been done before in any era.

As for Brighton, they’ve seen their odds drop to 125/1 to win the league but they remain in the hunt for a top four finish at 9/2.
