Manchester United defender Jonny Evans has admitted that he considered retiring from football due to injury whilst at Leicester City last season.

Jonny Evans spent five years at Leicester City before departing in the summer, and was part of last season’s squad that suffered a surprise relegation to the Championship after finishing 18th.

The Northern Ireland international only made 14 appearances for the 2015/16 Premier League winners however, as he struggled with a persistent calf problem throughout the Foxes’ torrid campaign.

His contract at the King Power came to an expiration at the end of the season, and with a new era on the horizon for the club – they allowed him to depart on a free transfer, to which Evans surprisingly returned to Manchester United.

Evans initially joined on a temporary basis during pre-season to maintain his fitness levels, however Erik ten Hag opted to make his stay permanent with a one-year deal, and he has since made four appearances for the Red Devils in 2023/24.

The central defender even contributed to Bruno Fernandes winning the Premier League Goal of the Month award, as he floated an inch-perfect long-ball over the top for the Portugal international to volley home against Burnley.

But it hasn’t been plain-sailing for the 35-year-old, as the Belfast native admitted on international duty that he thought he might have had to retire last season due to his injury struggles.

“I went through a stage last year where I started thinking, ‘maybe it is coming to an end,'” he said.

“There’s no doubt I did have those thoughts. At the time I couldn’t get over injuries and every time I came back I was breaking down.

“I had lots of people telling me, ‘there’s no way you’re close to finishing’, but you have to prove that to yourself and I feel like I’ve been able to do that.

“Every time you complete a match you think, ‘there’s another one down, I can do that’, and sometimes you just have to confirm that to yourself.

“I’ve been pleased I’ve been able to go through that process and I feel I’m in a good place.”
