Newcastle United defender Kieran Trippier has jumped to the defence of Jordan Henderson after the Al-Ettifaq midfielder was booed during England’s 1-0 friendly win over Australia on Friday evening.

Kieran Trippier has defended Jordan Henderson ahead of England’s European Championship qualifier against Italy after the ex-Liverpool skipper was booed by a section of Three Lions fans during their 1-0 win over Australia on Friday.

Gareth Southgate’s side will secure qualification to Euro 2024 if they avoid defeat to the Italians on Tuesday, however it’s stories surrounding Henderson that have dominated the headlines in the lead-up to the clash.

The Al-Ettifaq midfielder captained England in Harry Kane’s absence on Friday, but was booed upon his substitution, with many fans claiming that he shouldn’t be in the squad – let alone the line-up.

It comes following his controversial move to the Saudi Pro League, as well as after the 33-year-old posted a video on social media backing Saudi Arabia’s bid to host the 2034 World Cup.

Trippier, who came on in place of Henderson on Friday night, defended the 79-time England international, claiming that he’s ‘an unbelievable character’.

“For us as players, we stick together,” the Newcastle defender said.

“I see Hendo on a daily basis. He is an unbelievable character, he’s a leader – what he does for the team, playing or not playing.

“He’s an unbelievable person to have in the dressing room. He makes sure everyone trains properly. He sets standards.”

Henderson himself responded to some of England’s fans jeering him, confirming that it won’t affect his love for representing his nation.

“It’s not nice, your own fans [booing]. I love playing for England,” he said.

“I have done for many years, that’s why I’m still here.

“I still want to play for England for as long as I possibly can and give everything for the team, for my country.”
