Newmarket Racing Tips & Trends For ITV Racing On Friday 13th Oct 2023
Five top races on ITV4 today (Fri 13th Oct) as Newmarket stages the opening day of their 2-day Future Champions Festival – a chance to see some potential stars of the future.
The Friday action will also figure Frankie Dettori, who yesterday announced his retirement U-turn – with the Italian having three booked rides at HQ – Sweetest (1:50), Amiente Amigo (4:10) and Boogie Woogie (5:55).
We get going with the Group Three Cornwallis Stakes (1:50pm) and with 15 of the last 20 winners having won at least twice and within the last 30 days, these are two big stats against the fancied Inquisitively. It’s also interesting that 4 of the last 6 winners came from stalls 3 or lower – the already mentioned Inquisitively, Zoulu Chief and Toca Madera tick this box.
The Group 3 Oh So Sharp Stakes (2:25pm) is next and it’s a race jockeys William Buick (2) and James Doyle (3) have won 5 times between them in the last 9 years – they ride Dance Sequence and Star Music. Ryan Moore also has a far record in the race with wins in 2006 and 2010, plus trainer Ralph Beckett has successes in 2004 and 2012 – the pair team up with Kingman filly Skellet, who impressed in winning at Salisbury last month on only her second start.
Fillies Don’t Have A Great Record In The Challenge Stakes
With only one filly winner of the Group 2 Challenge Stakes (3:00pm) in the last 20 runnings, then Matilda Picotte will have this stat to overcome. 17 of the last 20 winners were also aged 5 or younger, so the 7 year-old Pogo is overlooked too. CD winners Audience and Shouldvebeenaring will be popular, but Ryan Moore catches the eye booked for the Hannon entry Chindit and is chanced.
Just 9 past runnings of the Old Rowley Cup Handicap (3:35), but already 7 of those winners carried 9st or less, while 67% came from a double-figure draw and had raced in the last 5 weeks. With that in mind, both Alsakib and Denmark seem to have a lot going for them.
Aidan O’Brien’s Ylang Ylang Can Improve For The Step Up In Trip
The final ITV4 race at Newmarket on Friday is the bet365 Fillies Mile (4:10pm) – a race that’s been won by the likes of Inspiral, Laurens and Minding since 2015.
It’s a pot that trainer Aidan O’Brien has a good record in too – winning 3 of the last 9. He’s got two of the 8 runners in Brilliant and Ylang Ylang, with the last-named their main hope.
This 2 year-old filly was third in the Rockfel Stakes here last time and behind Shuwari (2nd) so has a bit to find. However, this step up from 7f to 1m looks ideal having run on well the last day and so this well-bred Frankel filly is taken to give O’Brien another success in this Newmarket Group One.
