Chief of Premier League referees Howard Webb has ensured supporters that they’ve added more measures to avoid repeat of the VAR Luis Diaz error.

During  the Tottenham and Liverpool game Diaz saw his goal ruled out for offside despite replays showing he was clearly onside. VAR audio footage has since been released that showed a mix up between referee officials. Darren England in VAR said the check was ‘perfect’ which allowed Simon Hooper to continue with the game. England realises his mistake as he thought Hooper had already given the goal to Liverpool. Play carried on though as the referees couldn’t stop the game.

“We’ve put quite a lot of steps in place to ensure the error that we saw doesn’t happen again,” Webb explained to Match Officials: Mic’d Up.

“One of things this brought into sharp focus is the need to reiterate some of those communication protocols which are really valuable in VAR to prevent this type of thing happening,” added Webb.

“We got all of the officials together, we spoke through the need to go through that process very diligently. We’re really disappointed for the game, we’re disappointed for our reputation.

“We worked hard over the subsequent days to have a look at what we needed to do to put in place those safeguards around the communication to avoid that sort of thing happening again.”
