Birmingham City have announced the departure of head coach John Eustace with Wayne Rooney reportedly lined up as a replacement.

The Blues took to Twitter to confirm they are parting ways with Eustace, despite sitting sixth and winning three of their last four matches.

Eustace had been rumoured with an abrupt exit over recent days, with many supporters feeling the departure is unjust.

Birmingham have scored seven goals in their last two home matches, while also earning a victory over local rivals, West Brom.

The recently sacked coach had been warmly accepted by the Birmingham faithful, being from the area and playing for the club.

Rumours over a replacement have started to circulate and former Derby County manager Wayne Rooney has been deemed the most likely successor.

Rooney, Manchester United’s record goal scorer, has been the head coach at DC United but has decided to leave the USA and return to England.

Rooney was asked about his future, following his departure from DC.

He said: “I’ve seen a lot of reports in the media but I have nothing lined up. Im returning to England to see my family but if something comes up in October or November then obviously I’ll take a look.”

The Brit’s most recent role in England was also in the Midlands, as he held the reins at Derby County – where he faces relegation in his final season.

The Rams were in financial turmoil and had 21 points deducted, meaning Rooney had little chance of keeping the club in England’s second division.

Rooney has not been confirmed as the new manager, however, many expect the former Derby boss to take charge in the coming days.
