Leigh Wood stunned Josh Warrington in the seventh round with an incredible TKO to flip the fight on its head and retain the WBA featherweight championship.

And still!

A fantastic left hook from Wood kicked off the finishing sequence, before following up with two right hooks and an extra left to stop Warrington who was bidding to become a three-time world champion.

Heading into round seven, Wood looked behind by a considerable margin but he prevailed late on yet again to stun his opponent with an impressive combo in Sheffield.

Despite somehow hauling himself to his feet after suffering the damage, the referee waved the fight off and Warrington has now lost consecutive bouts for the first time in his professional career.

The last 18 months have been quite the journey for the Nottingham native, who has:

  • Ended Michael Conlan’s undefeated record
  • Voluntarily put his title on the line in a loss to Mauricio Lara
  • Won it back ten weeks later

And now with another world-class knockout in his locker, we can expect Wood to get the fight he has been dreaming of at the City Ground – home of Nottingham Forest at some point in 2024.

Wood, speaking to DAZN said:

“I knew the further fight went on, the sloppier he gets. I didn’t stick to the game plan well, I got disorientated after getting hit in the back of my head.

“I need a little break. We’ll wait until the end of the football season and we know what’s next don’t we?

“Maybe we can run it back, it was a great fight.”

Eddie Hearn, speaking to DAZN said:

“Boxing is the toughest sport of all. Leigh’s fans have come together to witness a thriller of a fight. I had Josh well ahead. I said to Tony Bellew that I thought Leigh was done. This man is incredible. It shows that if you stick at it then anything is possible. For years, he’s been on at me about a fight at the City Ground.

“He’s done at featherweight, that was his last fight. Look at his last fights, it’s an incredible run.”
