Arsenal and Manchester go head-to-head once again on Sunday. It’s a contest that might be more bitter than usual giving the circumstances that occurred last season with Arsenal losing out on the title to City in the closing games of the season. Today, Sportslens has a look back at some of the best games in this fixture from the past decade with the rivalry slowing brewing up every time these two meet.
Man City 6-3 Arsenal – 14th December 2013
This one just about qualifies and I’m glad it does because this game gave us everything. Goals, controversial offside decisions, injuries and big penalty shouts being turned down. Despite Theo Walcott getting a goal, Sergio Aguero and Alvaro Negredo had City 2-1 up at half-time. Aguero had to come off shortly after half-time due to a calf injury but that didn’t stop City from scoring. Fernandinho put them 3-1 up before Walcott was amongst the goals again to half the deficit. David Silva them made it 4-2 with a lovely finish from Jesus Navas’ low cross. Fernandinho added another before Per Mertesacker grabbed a consolation goal. A Yaya Toure penalty then wrapped up what was a miserable day for the Gunners. They’ll feel hard done by as they probably should’ve had a penalty when Jack Wilshire’s through ball hit the hand of Pablo Zabaleta.
Arsenal 1-3 Man City – 15h February 2023
There was so much riding on this one. This one was meant to have been played in November but was postponed due to a Europa League fixture clash for Arsenal. At this point, Arsenal and Man City were in a two-horse race for the league title. Kevin De Bruyne opened the scoring for City after a poor backpass from Takehiro Tomiyasu. Arsenal pulled level before half-time when Eddie Nketiah was fouled in the box by City goalkeeper Ederson. Bukayo Saka converted the penalty. Jack Grealish and Erling Haaland struck daggers into the hearts of the Arsenal fans. It was an intense game with a great atmosphere. The match resulted in City knocking Arsenal off top spot.
Man City 0-2 Arsenal – 18th January 2015
This game was decided by a Santi Cazorla masterclass. Going into this, Man City were fighting for the title and Arsenal were in a top four race. City captain Vincent Kompany conceded a penalty when he fouled Nacho Monreal. Cazorla was a cool customer when he side footed the penalty past Joe Hart for the lead. Cazorla was at the heart of the action once more as his free-kick met the head of Oliver Giroud who doubled the Gunners lead. City’s title hopes were left in tatters as the gap between them and Chelsea just got bigger.
Arsenal 2-2 Man City – 13th September 2014
Yes, both games from the 2014/15 season ended up being classics. The game resulted in a draw which served four goals but there could’ve been a lot more. Danny Welbeck made his debut for Arsenal that day and it could’ve been a dream start for him but he hit the post when 0ne-on-one with Joe Hart after a poor backpass from David Silva. Sergio Aguero opened the scoring for Man City just before the half-hour mark. Arsenal responded well in the second half with lovely finishes from Jack Wilshire and Alexis Sanchez. Arsenal were close to getting the three points but Martin Demichelis equalised with a header from a corner. City could’ve snatched all three points late on as Aleksander Kolarov smashed the post. Laurent Koscielny nearly scored an own goal when his clearance hit his own post.
