Will Napoli vs Real Madrid be postponed? That is the question many fans are posing ahead of Tuesday night’s Champions League meeting, after Italy’s third largest city was rocked by an earthquake on Monday night.
Naples Earthquake
The 4.2 on the Richter scale is only thought to be ‘light’ in comparison to the devastating events witnessed in Morocco last month, but residents in Naples were rudely awoken by violent tremors on Monday night.
Roof tiles smashing cars below and rubble being moved from long-standing buildings made for terrifying scenes, with people rushing into the streets clutching their belongings.
Naples lies west of a chain of super volcanoes, dubbed the Campi Flegrei region, which last erupted in 1538 and is situated across the bay of the city opposite Pompeii – the site of one of history’s most violent eruptions from nearby Mount Vesuvius.
Seismic activity in recent weeks has heightened fears that it could be the prelude to an eruption, with Monday night’s earthquake the second in the space of a week.
Tremors could be felt as far away as Italy’s capital Rome, some 220km north.
A joint-study by Italy’s National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology and University College London revealed the volcano was nearing ‘breaking point’ and in an ‘extremely dangerous state’ at the start of the summer.
Will Napoli vs Real Madrid Be Postponed?
Although no deaths or significant injuries have been reported, fears over player and fan safety for Tuesday night’s Champions League game have been expressed by some fans in the region.
Everything points to the game going ahead, with the worst of the damage believed to be in surrounding hamlets of Pozzuoli and Agnano.
Naples lies 10km away from the epicentre of Monday night’s earthquake, meaning the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium and surrounding areas are largely without damage.
