Former Manchester United defender Steve Bruce believes Red Devils’ defender Harry Maguire is a ‘very, very good player’ who would ‘probably walk into many Premier League sides’.

Harry Maguire returned to the Manchester United fold on Tuesday evening, featuring for the entire 90 minutes in the Red Devils’ 3-0 win over Crystal Palace in the Carabao Cup third round.

The 30-year-old gave a good account of himself in what was his first appearance since scoring an own-goal on England duty against Scotland, a mistake for which he received a mass amount of criticism from both fans and members of the media.

During coverage of the clash against Palace though, former United defender Steve Bruce opted to back Maguire and defended him by claiming that he would ‘walk into many, many Premier League sides’.

Bruce, who was most recently the manager of Championship side West Bromwich Albion, also insisted Maguire has ‘never’ let Manchester United down despite being heavily criticised, as well as being stripped of the club’s captaincy by Erik ten Hag.

Bruce said: “It’s very rare fans here get on top of anybody’s back, they never single out an individual, I don’t think [criticism] it generates from the stadium, maybe social media is the key to it all.

“He [Maguire] has never let anybody down, I don’t think he has let Manchester United down,

“Let’s not forget he’s a very, very good player who would probably walk into many, many Premier League teams.

“Of course he has made a few mistakes and the odd own goal like last week [against Scotland], he has made mistakes, he is a centre-back but over the years has proved to be a very good player.”
