Brighton ended their 122-year wait for European football last night as they welcomed AEK Athens to the Amex. They ended up losing the game 3-2 and manager De Zerbi demands his players to be smarter.

Brighton were second favourites behind Liverpool to win the Europa League before the game. But Brighton were stunned by AEK Athens as the Greek side took over the Amex.

“I congratulated the players afterwards,” said De Zerbi. “I can’t be happy when we win at Old Trafford and sad today because we lost if the performances were both good.

“But if we want to make another upgrade, we have to know the situation where we concede goals. We knew before the game, AEK have two situations where they can score, set pieces and counter attack.”

“We have to be more focussed, with the right attitude and more smart to defend the set pieces. I am sad for result and sad because we couldn’t make our fans, ourselves and the club happy. But the performance was good,” De Zerbi added.

Brighton were drawn into the Europa League’s ‘group of death’ as they face Marseille and Ajax next. They played each other last night in a 3-3 draw which I’m De Zerbi will be watching over. As for AEK Athens, it was probably Brighton’s easiest match out of the six they will be playing. Not getting off to winning ways will concern Brighton fans and De Zerbi regarding getting into the knockout stages.
