Newcastle are back in Europe’s most prestigious competition for the first time since the 2002/03 season. But no player is more honoured to be involved in the Champions League than Dan Burn.

Burn has had a weird path on the way to becoming a first choice in the current Newcastle squad. He was rejected by Newcastle at age 11 and then began playing for local clubs such Blyth Spartans, Blyth Town and New Hartley. Burn worked at Asda to earn some extra cash.

“I went to sixth form and went and did a little bit of work. I was working at Asda pushing trolleys,” Burn said.

“If you had said then that I would be in the Premier League, I would have laughed at you. It was a little bit more of a different route for me but it helped me become even more determined and focused.”

The Geordie went on to play for Fulham in his later teen years after a scout gave him a chance after seeing him play as a defender.

He added: “When I went to Fulham, a lot of the stuff the lads were given, I wasn’t given at Darlington. I was washing my own kit and bringing in my own packed lunches. So I do think it’s helped me.”

Brighton then signed Burn in 2022 for £13m and he made an instant impact with other managers and clubs admiring his abilities.

Burn was one of the first signings made by manager Eddie Howe at Newcastle. Nineteen years after he was released as a youngster, he is about to play Champions League football for them.

Newcastle are in the ‘group of death’ with PSG, Borussia Dortmund and AC Milan.
