Following a short hiatus after the international break, the Premier League returns this weekend with fixtures scheduled right the way through to Monday. Below you take you through some of our FPL gameweek 5 tips and predictions.
FPL Gameweek 5 Tips
Son Heung-Min
- Next Fixture: Sheffield United (H)
- Price: £9.1m
It was difficult to comprehend a player winning the Golden Boot in such spectacular fashion, to then go on and register a fairly underwhelming year the following season, by Son’s lofty standards.
This was indicative of the wider feeling around Tottenham during the tail end of Antonio Conte’s reign, with the negativity and pessimism of the Italian being drip-fed to the players.
Fast-forward to gameweek 5 of the new season, and Ange Postecoglou has transformed Tottenham into a side suddenly brimming with enthusiasm and gusto.
Prior to the international break, Spurs put on an attacking masterclass as they fired five past Burnley, with new captain Son Heung-Min netting a hat-trick.
The South Korean appears to be relishing life under Postecoglou and has shouldered a huge amount of responsibility after Harry Kane’s departure. Add to that the creative spark of James Maddison and the possibility for penalties, he is likely to be one of the most popular picks for gameweek 5.
Against a Sheffield United side who have conceded seven times in four fixtures, Son should have plenty of chances to add to his tally.
Destiny Udogie
- Next Fixture: Sheffield United (H)
- Price: £4.7m
Sheffield United have the lowest expected goals (xG) of any team in the Premier League, which bodes well for Tottenham’s defence.
We have picked out Destiny Udogie has our second Spurs pick given his dual threat for points. The 20-year-old has been one of the more impressive summer acquisitions in the league, locking down a spot at left-back and proving his worth with two assists already.
With Postecoglou’s huge emphasis on high-pressing full-backs, he is constantly found in dangerous positions and represents a decent chance for both a clean sheet and assists/goals.
Gabriel
- Next Fixture: Everton (A)
- Price: £5m
Thomas Partey’s new-found role as an inverted right-back has been put on hold after yet another injury, allowing Gabriel to return to the fold last time out in a similar defensive line-up to the one we saw last season.
The Arsenal were left perplexed by his absence from the starting XI in the first few game weeks, given the Brazilian was one of the Gunners’ stand out performers in 2022/23.
After a slight scare having been pictured with an ice pack while on international duty, he is expect to be fit for their trip to Everton.
The Toffees have scored the joint-least in the league this season with just two, and coupled with Gabriel’s threat in front of goal (three goals from 4.52 xG last season), he is a worthwhile pick for gameweek 5.
Martin Odegaard
- Next Fixture: Everton (A)
- Price: £8.5m
Before VAR decided to overturn the penalty call on Kai Havertz’s tumble in the box against Manchester United, it was Martin Odegaard once again with the ball in his hands.
Him and Bukayo Saka have shared the responsibility from the spot so far with one a piece, but with the added possibility of more goals from the spot for Odegaard, he is fast becoming Arsenal’s most potent threat for FPL points.
The Norwegian equalled Frank Lampard’s record for the most non-penalty goals in a season with 15 last term, and in an even more dangerous Gunners side he should have no trouble reaching those numbers once more.
Sean Dyche’s side have been nothing short of disastrous thus far, and Odegaard has the necessary tools to unlock a weak Everton defence.
Taiwo Awoniyi
- Next Fixture: Burnley (H)
- Price: £6.6m
Taiwo Awoniyi’s glittering form as of late continued into the international break after netting for Nigeria, and he returns to the Premier League as one of its most prolific forwards.
Nine goals in his previous eight is a league-leading tally within that time frame, and although fans are starting to take notice of his threat in front of goal, less than five percent of FPL players have stuck him in their team.
Nottingham Forest, who are notoriously strong on home soil, welcome the Premier League’s worst defence in terms of goals scored in Burnley.
