Spanish Football president Luis Rubiales has stepped down after recent controversies surrounding him. He announced his retirement during an interview with Piers Morgan on his show, Piers Morgan: Uncensored.

Rubiales was given a 90-day suspension by FIFA to  open up an investigation following his kiss with player Jenni Hermoso that was deemed not consensual. Hermoso has recently filed a legal complaint against Rubiales. Rubiales had remained that the kiss was “mutual” and was adamant he would not quit his role.

Hermoso’s legal complaint means Rubiales could face criminal charges. According to a sexual consent law passed last year, he could face a fine or a prison sentence of one to four years if found guilty of sexual assault.

In his interview with Morgan, Rubiales, when asked about the situation and his approach towards women responded: “I love my daughters so much and they love me so, so much. I am very happy and very proud of them. They are very near to me.

Rubiales also confirmed during the interview that he will be stepping down, saying “of course I cannot continue my work”. My father, my daughters, I spoke with them…and some friends very close to me, and they say to me ‘Luis, now you have to focus on your dignity and to continue your life.’

Because if you know probably you are going to damage people you love, and the sport you love…in this situation now, (it is) the thing I have to do.”

He released a statement saying he has submitted his resignation to the Spanish federation’s acting president, Pedro Rocha.

His resignment has followed on from Spain Women’s head coach Jorge Vilda resigning after he was seen groping a member of staff whilst celebrating a goal.
