It’s being reported today that Manchester United’s net spend over the past decade represents the biggest deficit in football. In the past couple of years, fans of the club have demanded the Glazers to sell, and this new report will only add fuel to the fire.
Manchester United Net Spend
According to CIES Football Observatory report, Manchester United’s net spend has now hit negative £1.2bn over the past decade. They have spent £1.67bn on new signings since 2014 and only made £482m from sales.
Fans have wanted their owners out for some time, and despite welcoming potential bidders to send their proposals this summer, the Glazers have held firm and say they are ‘exploring strategic alternatives’. It’s understood they’d still be willing to sell if the right price came along – they are though to value the club at £10bn.
Elsewhere, Chelsea have garnered plenty of controversy over their spending habits and have, unsurprisingly, spent the most money since 2014.
Their ability to recoup money from sales has saved them from the embarrassment of top spot but still find themselves on this list at number two. They’ve made £1.37bn in sales but have spent £2.25bn, with Todd Boehly responsible for a billion pounds worth of incomings over the past year alone.
Arsenal (£745m), Spurs (£520m), West Ham (£450m) and Saudi-owned Man City (£732m) and Newcastle (£574m) also make the list.
Outside of the UK, PSG (£865m) are the highest in 3rd. AC Milan and financially-troubled Barcelona are also in the top 10.
CIES summarised the findings in a statement, which reads: “The figures published include fixed transfer fees, any add-ons regardless of whether they have actually been paid, as well as sums invested in the context of paying loans.
“Amounts negotiated for loans with an obligation to buy are included in the breakdown for the year of the transfer. Within the limits of available information, the data on beneficiaries considers sell-on fees negotiated by previous clubs.”
