Chelsea goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga has spoken out about his loan move to Real Madrid this summer, saying that he opted to leave the Blues as the ‘project wasn’t right’.

Kepa Unsettled With Chelsea Project

The Chelsea player spoke to Marca this week about why he decided to make the move back to Spain this summer, after new boss Mauricio Pochettino took over the Blues at the beginning of the season.

“Yes, it was very fast [move to Real Madrid]. It’s true that Pochettino wanted me to stay and he told me that I was going to play, that he trusted me, but I thought that a change would be good for me, I wanted a change.

Real Madrid weren’t the only side looking to secure Kepa’s signature this season though, as Thomas Tuchel was hoping to sign the  28-year-old to Bayern Munich.

“Thomas Tuchel called me. We were close to going to Munich.

“Yes, well it’s also true that although I didn’t play with him, it reinforces you a little that a coach, that in the first stage you have not played at all with him, then he claims or wants you in his team, this makes you feel good.”

Tuchel was in charge of Chelsea last season and he obviously took a shine to the Spaniard, with the German looking to bring Kepa to the Bundesliga giants along with Harry Kane.

Unfortunately for Tuchel and Bayern Munich, Kepa opted with a move to Real Madrid and he admitted that he simply couldn’t say no to the Galacticos.

“I felt it was time for a change of scenery. I wanted to stay, but I felt that the project was not the right one. When Madrid calls you, everything changes. My signing was closed in just a few hours and a couple of calls.”

Kepa has started Madrid’s last two matches in La Liga, conceding just one goal during the Spanish giants’ unbeaten start to the season.
