What Is The UEFA Super Cup?

The UEFA Super Cup is an annual super cup football match organised by UEFA and contested by the winners of the two main European club competitions; the UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League.

Manchester City clinched the Champions League trophy with a win over Inter Milan and Sevilla won their seventh Europa League trophy by beating Roma.

Real Madrid are the current holders of the UEFA Super Cup, beating Frankfurt 2-0 last year.

Which Club Has Won The Super Cup The Most?

5 times – AC Milan, Barcelona, Real Madrid

Three sides share the record for most amount of trophies won, with AC Milan, Real Madrid and Barcelona all winning the match five times.

Los Blancos were victorious in 2002, 2014, 2016, 2017 and 2022, with all of these entries coming from Champions League triumphs.

AC Milan have not won the trophy since 2007, being victorious in 1989, 1990, 1994, 2003 and as previously mentioned, 2007. The Italian side have also entered the match as winners of the major European Cup winners.

The last side to have won the award five times is Spanish giants, Barcelona, who reigned supreme in 1992, 1997, 2009, 2011, 2o15.

4 times – Liverpool

Alone in this section is Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool, who have won the trophy four times throughout their history. Getting their hands on the trophy in 1977, 2001, 2005 and 2019.

The 2005 triumph came after one of the most historic nights in Liverpool’s history, as the Reds came from 3-0 down to draw 3-3 with AC Milan and win the Champions League final on penalties.

3 times – Atletico Madrid

Arguably the third biggest club in Spain, Atletico Madrid, have won the UEFA Super Cup an impressive three times and have been a force to be reckoned with over recent seasons.

All of their triumphs have come in the 2010’s, winning the trophy in 2010, 2012 and 2018 – beating Inter Milan, Chelsea and Real Madrid respectively.

2 times – Ajax, Anderlecht, Bayern Munich, Chelsea, Juventus, Valenica

A host of teams have won the competition twice, with the stand outs being Bayern Munich and Chelsea. The Bundesliga side won the match in 2013 and 2020, whilst the Blues were victorious in 1998 and 2021.

Ajax came out on top in the first ever Super Cup back in 1973, when the match was played across two legs – as they beat Milan 6-1 on aggregate (despite losing the opening leg 1-0). The Dutch side were also victorious in 1995.

Anderlecht clinched the trophy in 1976 and 1978, whilst Juventus did the same in 1984 and 1996. Finally Valencia make their way onto the list after winning the competition in 1980 and 2004.
