Goodwood Favourites: Have They Handled Soft Ground Before?
The official going at Glorious Goodwood today (Friday 4th August) as eased to ‘soft’ with ‘good-to-soft’ in places after a drier day at the West Sussex track on Thursday.
However, after the heavy rain earlier in the week the going still has a fair bit of ease in it.
With that in mind, let’s take a look at today’s seven likely favourites and if they’ve run well in soft ground in the past.
Glorious Goodwood: Friday 4th August 2023

1:50 – Coral Goodwood Handicap Cl2 (3yo+ 0-105) 2m4½f ITV: CALLING THE WIND @ 5/1 with Paddy Power
Course and distance winner that won this race in 2021 but that win came on ‘good’ ground.
Has recently won the Northumberland Plate on the AW at Newcastle, but has this Richard Hughes handicap stayer got form on soft ground?
His last run on ‘soft’ ground was a 6th (of 16) in the Chester Cup in May – beaten 3 1/2 lengths – and overall has run okay with give underfoot.
However, it’s worth pointing out – he’s yet to win a race with some degree of ‘soft’ in the going description with his form figures reading 9-8-2-3-6-2-2-2-4-6.
VERDICT: You feel he’s got a small bit to prove in today’s conditions.

2:25 – Bonhams Thoroughbred Stakes (Group 3) Cl1 (3yo) 1m ITV: NOSTRUM @ 8/15 with Paddy Power
Promising 3 year-old from the Stoute yard that have a top record in this race. One of the Goodwood favourite bankers on day four and is sure to figure in many accas on the afternoon – but has he run well in soft ground before?
The short answer is no – mainly because he’s yet to race on anything softer than ‘good’ with all four runs coming on ‘good-to-firm’ or ‘good’.
He’s a Kingman colt though and with his sire having winning form on heavy and soft there is every reason to suggest his bloodline will make him okay on today ground – we’ll find out at 2:25pm.
VERDICT: Unraced on soft, but breeding suggests he’ll be fine.

3:00 – Coral Golden Mile Cl2 (3yo+) 1m ITV: LATTAM @ 9/2 with Paddy Power
A big field of 20 runner here but the likely favourite is Lattam for the William Haggas yard.
This 4 year-old has only raced 7 times but has won 4 of those and three have come in ground described as ‘good-to-soft’ (twice) and soft/heavy. Therefore, win, lose or draw the horse will have no excuses on the ground front.
His overall form with ‘soft’ in the going reads 1-1-11-1-2.
VERDICT: Form on soft so can’t use the ground as an excuse if he loses.

3:35 – King George Qatar Stakes (Group 2) Cl1 (3yo+) 5f ITV: HIGHFIELD PRINCESS @ 5/6 with Paddy Power
High-class mare that is the top-rated in the race here and is the one all the other have to beat now dropped in grade slightly.
She’s also a mare that has top Group One winning form on easing ground having won the Dubai Flying Five Stakes at the Curragh last September on soft.
Her form with cut reads 2-1-3-3-6-1-1.
VERDICT: Loves soft ground

4:10 – l’Ormarins King’s Plate Glorious Stakes (Group 3) Cl1 (4yo+) 1m4f RTV: HAMISH @ 8/11 with Paddy Power
Has won 50% of his 16 career starts, including last time out at York in the Group 3 Silver Cup on ‘good-to-soft’ ground.
Of his 7 flat turf wins, a massive six have had some degree of ‘soft’ in the description so today’s going will pose no issues. 1-1-2-4-4-1-1-2-1-1.
VERDICT: Another that loves soft ground

4:45 – Ire-Incentive It Pays To Buy Irish Nursery Handicap (IRE Incentive Race) Cl2 (2yo) 6f RTV: STARDUST @ 15/4 with Paddy Power
Just the three runs for this promising Ralph Beckett runner and has won two of them. However, he’s yet to race on ground anything softer than ‘good’ so the jury will be out on if she’ll handle it today.
His breeding (Zoustar) also suggests some concern as all his sire’s wins came on ‘good’ ground but there is some promise on the dam’s side with two wins on ‘good-to-soft’
Overall, with no proven form on soft there is some caution here.

5:20 – Coral Handicap Cl3 (3yo 0-90) 1m3f RTV: MASO BASTIE @ 4/1 with Paddy Power
The James Fanshawe team have a 40% record with their 3 year-olds at the track and run a promising sort here. This Churchill gelding has been well-backed in the build-up to the race and has run just four times (2 wins).
The good news for his backers is that one of those wins came on ‘soft’ ground at Lingfield back in December.
Overall, there should be a lot more to come from him and having shown soft ground is fine will have no excuses on the conditions front.
