Glorious Goodwood Horse Racing Trends and Tips Including the 2023 Goodwood Cup

2.50 – Coral Chesterfield Cup Handicap Cl2 1m1f192y ITV

With a massive 95% of the last 21 winners aged 4 or 5, then this is a big Goodwood trend against the 6+ year-olds in the race – including the recent York John Smith’s Cup winner Pride Of America (6).

We’ve also had 17 of the last 21 winners also carried 8-10 or more, so the bottom three on the card – Marhaba The Champ, Moktasaab and Satono Japan have this to overcome.

A double-figure stall has been a plus in recent years too, while it’s a race the Johnston yard (now Charlie) have a fine record in – with 7 wins in the last 21. They run Outbreak who must be on the shortlist.

Being unplaced last time out is another worthy stat – with this in mind, the Alan King runner Paradias course winner Imperial Fighter and Millebosc for William Haggas.

  • 20/21 – Aged 4 or 5 years-old
  • 19/21 – Had won over at least 1m2f before
  • 17/21 – Had won at least 3 times already during their career
  • 17/21 – Carried 8-10 or more
  • 16/21 – Had 4 or more previous runs that season
  • 14/21 – Returned 12/1 or shorter in the betting
  • 14/21 – Unplaced last time out
  • 12/21 – Had run at Goodwood before
  • 12/21 – Unplaced favourites
  • 12/21 – Returned a double-figure price in the betting
  • 7/21 – Trained by the Johnston yard (now Charlie)
  • 5/21 – Winning favourites (1 co-fav)
  • 3/21 – Won their last race
  • 2022 Winner: Forest Falcon (14/1)
  • 12 of the last 17 winners came from stalls 9 or higher
  • 11 of the last 17 winners came from a double-figure stall

 3.25 – Nicholson Gin Vintage Stakes (Group 2) Cl1 7f ITV

Frankie Dettori has won the Vintage Stakes six times in total and needs just one more to be the clear top jockey in the race (currently tied with Willie Carson) – he rides the Richard Fahey runner Golden Mind, who was last seen running third in the Chesham Stakes at Royal Ascot.

The Richard Hannon and Aidan O’Brien yards also have good record in the race and have chances again in Haatem/ Son (Hannon) and Mountain Bear (O’Brien). The last-named also has stall 7, which has been responsible for 50% of the last 6 winners.

89% of the last 9 winners have also come between stalls 5-9, which is great news for Golden Mind, Spanish Phoenix, Mountain Bear, Soldier’s Gold and Iberian.

  • 20/21 – Had won over 6f or 7f before
  • 20/21 – Finished 1st or 2nd last time out
  • 19/21 – Returned 6/1 or shorter in the betting
  • 17/21 – Had 2 or 3 previous career runs
  • 16/21 – Won last time out
  • 16/21 – Placed favourites
  • 13/21 – Winning favourites
  • 13/21 – Won by a March or later-born foal
  • 11/21 – Ran at either Newmarket or Ascot last time out
  • 10/21 – Had won 2 previous races
  • 4/21 – Had run at Goodwood before
  • 4/21 – Trained by Richard Hannon
  • 4/21 – Ridden by Frankie Dettori (6 in total)
  • 3/21 – Trained by Aidan O’Brien (3 of the last 9)
  • 3 of the last 6 winners came from stall 7
  • 8 of the last 9 winners came between stalls 5-9 (inc)
  • 4 of the last 13 winners came from stall 9
  • 2022 Winner: Marbaan (14/1)

4.00 – World Pool Lennox Stakes (Group 2) Cl1 7f ITV

The Frankie Dettori-ridden Kinross was runner-up in this race last year and looks primed to go well again in what doesn’t look as strong a race as last time. This Ralph Beckett runner was last seen running a cracking third in the July Cup at Newmarket behind the classy Shaquille and that looks the best form on the table. Last year he was also rated 112 but is now off a mark of 119 (top rated in the field) which shows his progression since.

12 of the last 14 winners also came from stalls 7 or lower – bad news for Al Suhail and Pogo, who are the two drawn high. With 3 of the last 12 winners coming from stall 5 and also 67% of the last 21 aged 3 or 4, then the main danger to Kinross looks to be Isaac Shelby.

  • 21/21 – Had won at least 2 times before
  • 18/21 – Returned 7/1 or shorter in the betting
  • 19/21 – Had 2 or more previous runs already that season
  • 18/21 – Previous Group Race winners
  • 17/21 – Had won over 7f before
  • 17/21 – Had previously won a Group 2 or 3
  • 14/21 – Aged 3 or 4 years-old
  • 12/21 – Had run at Goodwood before
  • 8/21 – Winning favourites
  • 7/21 – Ran at Ascot last time out
  • 12 of the last 14 winners came from stalls 7 or lower
  • 3 of the last 12 came from stall 5
  • 2022 Winner: Sandrine (12/1)

4.35 – Al Shaqab Goodwood Cup (British Champions Series) (Group 1) Cl1 2m ITV

The feature race on the day and all eyes will be on Frankie Dettori as he looks to back up his Ascot Gold Cup win on Courage Mon Ami here. The popular Italian jockey needs just one more win to become the all-time winning rider in the race (5 wins to date) and with this unbeaten 4 year-old will have every chance of doing just that.

Trainer John Gosden, who handles Courage Mon Ami, has a top record in the race too with 5 wins (4 of the last 6) and after that Royal Ascot win this Wathnan Racing gelding is now the joint top-rated in the field (with Broome). He’s also only had four career runs, so whereas there is no hiding place for many of the runners here – Courage Mon Ami could easily have more improvement in the locker.

With all of the last 19 winners having run in the last 45 days, this is against York scorer Giavellotto, who was last in action 74 days ago.

The Goodwood Cup has also been a good race for the favourites in recent times – with 62% of the last 21 winning – while the same number of winners also ran at Royal Ascot last time out too.

Ascot Gold Cup runner-up Coltrane looks to be the main danger to the Frankie runner – with just 3/4 of a length to find and is a pound better off this time. With Aidan O’Brien’s Emily Dicksinson (4th Gold Cup) sure to be popular too having won since at the Curragh. O’Brien is hunting his fourth Goodwood Cup win and also won the race last year.

Quickthorn can go best of those at a bigger price.

  • 18/21 – Placed last time out
  • 17/21 – Had 2 or more runs already that season
  • 17/21 – Had won a Group 1 or 2 race before
  • 15/21 – Aged 5 or older
  • 15/21 – Had won over at least 2m before
  • 14/21 – Returned 7/2 or shorter in the betting
  • 13/21 – Ran at Ascot last time out
  • 13/21 – Winning favourites
  • 12/21 – Won their previous race
  • 12/21 – Had run at Goodwood before
  • 4/21 – Trained by John Gosden (5 wins in total)
  • 4/21 – Won by a Godolphin-owned horse
  • 4/21 – Ridden by Frankie Dettori (5 wins in total)
  • 3/21 – Trained by Aidan O’Brien
  • Just one winner aged 8 or older in the last 19 runnings
  • All of the last 19 winners had run in the last 45 days
  • Stradivarius won the race in 2017, 2018, 2019 and 2020
  • Trainer John Gosden has trained 4 of the last 6 winners
  • 8 of the last 27 runnings were won by a previous winner of the race
  • 15 of the last 16 winners came from stall 10 or lower
  • 2022 Winner: Kyprios (6/4 fav)
