Newcastle have announced the signing of Sandro Tonali on a five-year deal from AC Milan, becoming the most expensive Italian footballer in history.

Tonali joins the Magpies for a £55m fee on a five-year deal, keeping him at St. James’ Park until 2028 as he swaps Milan for the Toon.

The 23-year-old departs the Serie A giants in favour of Newcastle’s promising project under Saudi ownership including Champions League football next season.

Tonali marks the club’s second signing of the summer following 18-year-old Yankuba Minteh’s move from Dutch outfit Feyenoord, who will be loaned straight back for another season.

The Italian midfielder, who will act as a defensive anchor in midfield presumably behind Joelinton and Bruno Guimaraes, scored seven goals and tallied 13 assists in 130 appearances for AC Milan.

He won a league title with Milan in the 2021/22 season and was named Player of the Year in consecutive seasons from 2017-19 during his time at Serie C side Brescia Calcio.

According to Premier League betting sites, Newcastle are 14/1 to win the title next season which would mark their first since 1927 – they have managed two runner-up finishes since 1992.

A revolution is underway on Tyneside and Newcastle are on the path to becoming a juggernaut of English football once again, and their activity in the transfer market only furthers this idea.

Tonali joins Alexander Isak as Newcastle’s joint-record signing and is a statement of intent from Eddie Howe’s side who will aim to build upon last season’s fourth-placed finish.
