Outgoing Chelsea midfielder N’Golo Kante has completed the purchase of third tier Belgian football club Royal Excelsior Virton, the club has confirmed.

French midfielder N’Golo Kante has purchased Belgian third division side Royal Excelsior Virton, and will take over from Flavio Becco on 1 July.

Coincidentally, that is the date that Kante will officially join Saudi Pro League champions Al-Ittihad after completing his switch from Chelsea earlier this month.

Last season, Royal Excelsior Virton plied their trade in the second tier in Belgium, but were condemned to relegation after finishing bottom of the league.

Nicknamed Les Gaumais, the club was formed 101 years ago in 1922, and play their home matches at the 4,572 capacity Stade Yvan Georges in Virton.

Based near the Luxembourg border, Kante is said to be planning a board revamp and will put a big focus on developing Virton’s Youth Academy.

Borussia Dortmund defender Thomas Meunier began his senior career with the club, therefore they already have some pedigree in player development.

Royal Excelsior Virton Statement On Kante Ownership

Confirming Kante’s ownership in a statement, club representatives expressed their delight at the takeover.

“Flavio (previous owner) is obviously extremely happy to be able to hand over the keys of the club to N’Golo Kante,” the statement read.

“[He is] a player of great class, not only for his footballing qualities but also and above all for his unanimously recognised human qualities.

“Driven by his passion for football, N’Golo Kante wants to continue to structure the club in order to consolidate its foundations, stabilise its staff and eventually reconnect with the tradition of training RE Virton’s Youth Academy.”
