Shaquille Fancied in July Cup Odds for Royal Ascot Follow-Up

Julie Camacho’s improving sprinter Shaquille stunned the Royal Ascot crowds by falling out the stalls, yet still got up under Oisin Murphy and overhauled red-hot favourite Little Big Bear to land the Commonwealth Cup for three-year-olds. Speedsters from that generation get their first chance to tackle their elders in elite company during Newmarket’s July Festival.

According to ante post July Cup odds available with Paddy Power, Shaquille is 9/4 favourite to follow-up on his Royal meeting triumph at Headquarters. The official BHA handicapper still believes Little Big Bear (3/1) to be the better horse, however, despite dropping his rating by 5lb to a mark of 119.

Aidan O’Brien has won two of the last five editions of the July Cup including with Ten Sovereigns in 2019. That one shares a sire with Little Big Bear, so that gives his powerful Irish connections hope of reversing the form. Three-year-olds have a 50 per cent strike rate in this events over the last eight years, so July Cup odds often favour them because of a generous 6lb weight for age allowance.

Also in the line-up is exciting Michael Dods filly Azure Blue (9/2). The handy four-year-old could make her Group 1 debut after lowering the colours of Highfield Princess at York, now switching back a track she truly loves. Azure Blue has three wins on the Rowley Mile and one on the July course from five career starts at Newmarket, so could well sock it to the colts and geldings engaged.
