According to UK betting sites, Newcastle are in the running to sign Manchester City midfielder, Kalvin Phillips, after a disappoint first season at the Etihad.

The Magpies were tipped to achieve great things following their Saudi Arabian takeover, but supporters would not have expected Champions League football to return to St James’ Park in the first season.

Eddie Howe surprised Premier League spectators as his side climbed up the table and a fourth place finish will see European football return to Tyneside for the first time in over two decades.

Champions League qualification was not the only achievement for the club this season, as they reached the Carabao Cup final – losing 2-0 to Manchester United.

Key signings have been key for the Toon since Howe’s appointment, with the likes of Bruno Guimaraes, Kieran Trippier and Daniel Burn playing a huge part in the club’s success.

One player that could potentially sign for Eddie Howe’s side is Manchester City midfielder, Kalvin Phillips, despite the England international expressing a desire to play for City next season.

The 27-year-old earned a move to the Champions of England following an impressive spell at Leeds United, where he made 234 appearances – contributing to 27 goals.

However, after joining Pep Guardiola’s side for £42m, Phillips failed to replicate the form he showed at Elland Road and made only 21 appearances in his opening campaign.

Playing only 593 minutes in all competitions, the future of the English midfielder has been left uncertain and a host of Premier League sides have shown interest.

Despite this interest, the former Leeds star has six-years remaining on his current deal, meaning any deal to sign the midfielder could face complications.
