Newcastle have opened talks with Inter Milan over midfielder Nicolo Barella, as Eddie Howe looks to bring the £50m Italian to the Premier League next season.

Barella has been essential in Inter’s success over the past couple of seasons, with the 26-year-old playing a huge part in the Italians’ Champions League run last year.

The Magpies surprised everyone last season and finished fourth in the Premier League, which earned them Champions League qualification for the first time since 2003.

With Newcastle back amongst Europe’s Elite, manager Eddie Howe is strengthening his squad ahead of what will be a demanding season in the Champions League.

Atop of Howe’s list this summer is said to be Nicolo Barella, who has impressed so much for both Inter and Italy in the past couple of seasons.

Barella can play as both an 8 and a 6, which is said to be Newcastle’s priority signing this summer as they look for a midfielder to partner the Brazilian Bruno Guimaraes.

Inter are reportedly keen on keeping Barella this summer, who is valued at over £50m by the Italian’s.

Newcastle have already shown that they aren’t afraid to spend big in recent transfer windows, as they broke their transfer record to sign Aleksander Isak for £60m last summer.

They may have to break the record again this summer to acquire Barella as well as James Maddison, who is also reportedly keen on a move to the Magpies following Leicester’s relegation last season.

It has been reported that Howe has around £75m to work with this summer, which might be enough to secure only one of the two midfielders Newcastle are so desperately after.
