Four players including Conners and Rai set -5 clubhouse target

Corey Conners, Aaron Rai, Justin Lower and Chesson Hadley combined for a share of the lead at five-under after Thursday’s opening round of the RBC Canadian Open.

Last year’s US Open champion Matt Fitzpatrick enjoyed a strong start as well ahead of the 2023 edition next week in Los Angeles, the third major of the calendar.

Rai recovered nicely from being three over after five holes to complete a fantastic 67, still searching for a first career win on the PGA Tour.

Conners made a bogey-free start and is aiming to become the first Canadian-born player to win the tournament since Pat Fletcher in 1954.

McIlroy opens defence with one-under 71, wedge struggles continue

Rory McIlroy’s opening round was mostly a mixed bag, shooting a one-under 71 to begin his defence of the title.

The Irishman continued to struggle with his wedges, losing -1.27 shots in approach play and -0.78 around the green but nailed some clutch putts (SG: +3.24) to keep himself in the mix early.

With five birdies and four bogeys, the up-and-down nature of his game right now isn’t a surprise considering the amount of stress he must be under alongside the pressures of being the face of the PGA Tour during this time.
