Manchester United coach Benni McCarthy believes it would be a ‘crime’ to sell David De Gea, despite his constant critics this season.

De Gea has come under heavy criticism plenty of times this season, despite winning the golden glove in the Premier League this season.

The Spaniard’s contract expires at the end of this month, however he is expected to sign an immediate extension before the end of summer.

There has been rumours surrounding an exit for De Gea this summer with Saudi Arabian clubs reportedly interested in signing the 32-year-old.

However United coach Benni McCarthy believes it would be a ‘crime’ to let United’s number one go this season.

“I understand everyone has a bad game here and there but it doesn’t stop him being one of the best goalkeepers I have seen or worked with. He is unbelievable.

“I get to see first hand more than what most people get to see. You see it only on a Saturday, you see a player make a mistake and the critics hit the roof.”

“It would be a crime if Man United lose a goalkeeper like David de Gea.”

Despite his world class ability, De Gea has been criticised for making errors in the biggest moments this season – including just last week in the FA Cup final where he arguably could have done better for both goals.

Even if United are to keep De Gea this summer, the Spaniard may face competition for the number one spot with Erik Ten Hag keen on bringing in a another goalkeeper regardless of De Gea’s situation.
