Rory McIlroy is scheduled to speak to the media today for the first time since the shock merger of the PGA and DP World Tour with the LIV Golf League.

From the very start of the Saudi interest in golf, McIlroy’s stance on the matter remained tight with a resilient loyalty to the PGA Tour despite being offered $500m to switch to LIV.

Just weeks ago at the PGA Championship, the Irishman told reporters he was going to take a conscious effort to sidestep the LIV-PGA narrative going forward.

He is set to face the media later today after his pro-am round ahead of the Canadian Open starting tomorrow, where he is aiming to become the first golfer to win the tournament three times in a row.

According to golf betting sites, McIlroy is the 5/1 outright favourite to win at Oakdale.

Various reports have also suggested that the 34-year-old was told to ‘f*** off’ by a rival player during the players-only meeting with PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan.

The Golf Channel also reported that McIlroy remained ‘mostly quiet’ during the meeting but had a brief exchange with Grayson Murray, the world’s 221st ranked golfer.

Murray was told to ‘play better’ by the four-time major champion, but the pair are said to be neighbourly and no hard feelings were involved.

The golf scene feels more like a soap opera than anything right now, which reflects badly on the sport.
