Ange Postecoglou wants to make Harry Maguire his first Tottenham signing

New Spurs manager Ange Postecoglou is eyeing Manchester United captain Harry Maguire as his first signing in north London.

According to Matt Law, the club have shown an interest in Maguire – which is said to ‘delight’ star striker Harry Kane, who has just one year left on his contract.

The out of favour defender has been put up for sale by United boss Erik ten Hag, who has preferred a partnership of Lisandro Martinez and Raphael Varane in front of David De Gea.

Maguire made the £80m move to Old Trafford in 2019 but has failed to become the player that United thought they were getting, once rated as an elite centre-back during his time at Leicester City.

The 30-year-old started just eight times for the Reds in the Premier League this season and England manager Gareth Southgate has warned the player his spot in the national team squad is in jeopardy if he continues to sit on the bench.

Despite his struggles in Manchester, new surroundings could be exactly what the player needs for a boost of confidence and belief that he is still a top centre-half in this league.

Reports suggest that whilst Maguire is not pushing to leave the club, the potential of getting a £40m return on what they paid four years ago is likely to confirm his fate.

The English contingent at Spurs sound like they would welcome the signing and the club is in need of reinforcement at the back this window.
