Luton Town face Coventry City at Wembley on Saturday in the Championship play-off final, in what’s set to be a special occasion for all involved. If they do get promoted, their stadium Kenilworth Road would become the smallest Premier League stadium of all time.
The Hatters could be just 90 minutes away from top flight football for the time in their history. If they were to beat Coventry on Saturday, they’d have gone from the National League to the Premier League in just nine seasons.
So, with Luton’s Kenilworth Road potentially about to become the smallest Premier League stadium of all time, read on to find out about more small Premier League stadiums.
Kenilworth Road Would Become Smallest Premier League Stadium Of All Time
10. Liberty Stadium (Swansea City) – 20,937
Swansea’s Liberty Stadium (now known as Swansea.com Stadium) comes in as the tenth smallest Premier League stadium on our list. It saw plenty of top flight action between 2011 and 2018 while the Swans were in the division and even hosted Europa League football. Swansea qualified for that European club competition after winning the League Cup.
The Swans’ ground was the first in Wales to see Premier League football since it formed in 1992, as they became the first club in the Principality to play in the top flight. It’s also home to Welsh rugby union club Ospreys.
9. Loftus Road (QPR) – 18,439
Loftus Road in West London is home to Queens Park Rangers and last saw Premier League football in 2015. It’s next on our smallest Premier League stadium list in ninth place.
Fans are close to the pitch at this Shepherd’s Bush ground due to the size, and it’s known for its good atmosphere and cosy feel.
8. Baseball Ground (Derby County) – 18,300
As the name suggests, the Baseball Ground was originally used for baseball, and the home of Derby County for almost a century from 1895 until 1997.
The last league match to be played there was a Premier League fixture between Arsenal and the Rams, but Arsene Wenger’s Gunners spoil the party as County prepared to switch to the larger Pride Park. Derby’s reserve team continued to use the Baseball Ground until 2003 when it was demolished.
7. Brentford Community Stadium (Brentford) – 17,250
The Brentford Community Stadium comes next on our smallest Premier League stadium list and by far the newest! Promotion to the top flight came at the perfect time for the Bees as it coincided with the opening of their new ground.
Brentford used to play their games at Griffin Park, but moved to this more modern environment for their Premier League adventure. Similarly to Swansea, the home of the Bees is a multi-purpose stadium, which they share with Premiership Rugby club London Irish.
6. Bloomfield Road (Blackpool) – 16,220
Blackpool’s Bloomfield Road comes next on our list, hosting Premier League back in 2010 when the Tangerines were promoted from the Championship.
The Seasiders have played here since 1901 with the great Stanley Matthews gracing the pitch in his prime. Bloomfield Road has only hosted one season in the top flight, in which Blackpool endured relegation.
5. The Dell (Southampton) – 15,200
Before making the switch to St. Mary’s, Southampton played at The Dell which comes in at fifth on our smallest Premier League stadium list.
This stadium opened back in September 1898, and Saints played there until 2001 before moving on to a more modern St Mary’s. The Dell has since been knocked down and made into flats.
4. County Ground (Swindon Town) – 14,700
Next on our list is the County Ground, which was home to Swindon Town when they played in the Premier League in the 1993/94 season. It remains the only season that the Robins were in the top flight of English football.
It’s been home to Swindon since 1895, making it one of the oldest football stadiums still used in the country.
3. Boundary Park (Oldham Athletic) – 13,559
Oldham Athletic’s Boundary Park comes in as the current second smallest Premier League stadium of all time on our list. The Latics played their home games here while in the top flight for two seasons between 1992 as founding members and their relegation in 1994.
Oldham were part of the inaugural Premier League campaign, but next term marks 30 years since they last graced the division.
2. Dean Court / Vitality Stadium (Bournemouth) – 11,364
Perhaps one of the most famous grounds in England, Bournemouth’s Vitality Stadium is the smallest ground in Premier League history – for now at least.
It’s played host to many top flight games since Bournemouth came up after winning the Championship title in 2014/15. The Cherries lasted five seasons before they were relegated, but returned to the Premier League in 2022, and have survived in their first season back.
1. Kenilworth Road (Luton Town) – 10,356
If Luton Town are promoted, then they would officially have the smallest Premier League stadium of all time. With a capacity of just 10,356 the Hatters’ Kenilworth Road is known for its size and quirkiness.
Away supporters have to enter the ground via turnstiles that are embedded into a row of terraced houses, and they’re fairly well known for just that alone. Pictures and videos often do the rounds on social media of fans entering the stadium from that entrance.
There is plans in place for Luton to move to a bigger ground, but for now Kenilworth Road is home, and it could soon be the smallest Premier League stadium of all time.
