Dante Stakes Trends to Help You Find The 2023 Winner
It’s the three-day York Dante Festival this midweek (Weds-Fri) with some top-class flat action to look forward to that will give us many clues ahead of the big Epsom Derby and Royal Ascot Meetings next month.
One of the biggest contests of the week is the Al Basti Equiworld Dubai Dante Stakes today (Thursday, 18th May) – a race that is one of the best Epsom Derby trial races in recent times.
In the last 20 runnings, 18 Dante winners went onto run in the Derby – with 5 doing the double.
The most recent of those was only 12 months ago when the Sir Michael Stoute-trained Desert Crown took both races – therefore, all eyes will be on this year’s winner ahead of the Derby on Saturday June 3rd.

The Dante Stakes a Top Trial For The Epsom Derby
As already mentioned, the Dante Stakes is probably the best Epsom Derby trial race in recent times.
This is backed up with 18 Dante winners heading to Epsom the following month – with 5 winning both races.
Golden Horn in 2015 had been the most recent of those horses to win both races until Desert Crown 12 months ago added his name to the roll of honour.
Other horses in the last 20 years win do the Dante/Derby double were – Authorized (2007), Motivator (2005) and North Light (2004).
65% Of Recent Dante Winners Had A Run Already That Season
Having a recent run is certainly something to look for ahead of Thursday’s Dante Stakes – 13 of the last 20 winners back this up.
With this in mind, the likes of Flying Honours, Continuous and King Of Steel, who will all be having their first runs of the new season, would have this Dante Stakes trend to overcome.
Respect Last Time Out Winners In The Dante Stakes
Following on from the last stat, we can also note ‘last time out winners’. This trend has been responsible for 13 of the last 20 Dante winners too, so this year Der My Friend, Military Order, Continuous, Passenger, Epictetus, Canberra Legend and Flying Honours all have this on their side as recent winners.
Gosden, O’Brien, Johnston and Stoute Are The Dante Trainers To Follow
By far the best trainers in the Dante Stakes in the last 20 years have been John Gosden, Aidan O’Brien, Mark Johnston and Sir Michael Stoute.
Between the quartet they’ve won the prize 15 times since 1997.
Mark Johnston has won 2 of the last 6, Gosden 3 of the last 8, while O’Brien has 4 wins in total and Stoute 7 successes – joint top in the race history with Sir Henry Cecil.
Anything Buick, Moore and Dettori Ride Should Be Noted
William Buick, Ryan Moore and Frankie Dettori are the go-to jockeys in the Dante Stakes too.
Buick has steered home three winners since 2013, with his most recent Hurricane Lane in 2021.
Moore has three wins too, with the Grey Gatsby in 2014 his latest, while Frankie

What Is The Dante Stakes Favourites Record Like?
In short – not that great. We’ve only had 5 winning Dante Stakes favourites in the last 20 runnings, and 3 in the last 15.
Last year, Desert Crown was a winning joint-favourite, but in the last 10 years only Roaring Lion in 2018 has been the clear outright winning Dante Stakes jolly.
This year’s Dante favourite looks likely to be Godolphin’s Flying Honours.
