Both Arsenal and Chelsea, who tested the waters back in January, will be enthused by the latest Moises Caicedo transfer news which suggests a clause was included in his Brighton contract extension that allows him to leave this summer.

A key component of Brighton’s well-oiled machine, Moises Caicedo has caught the attention of the Premier League‘s elite this season, which very nearly led to his exit in January.

The Ecuadorian publicly admitted his desire to experience a new challenge amid Arsenal’s concrete interest, which saw the Gunners lodge three separate bids, all of which were rebuffed by Brighton’s typically stubborn hierarchy.

They eventually relinquished their interest after being priced out of a move, and so as not to risk their recent healthy relationship with the Seagulls.

However, it is no secret that senior figures at Arsenal have already began to draw up a shortlist of targets for the summer window, and it is expected that they will come back in for Caicedo.

The 21-year-old extended his contract until 2027 not long after January’s ordeal in a surprising U-turn, but The Athletic’s David Ornstein has indicated that Brighton may sanction several big-money moves this summer, with Caicedo no exception.

He said when commenting on fellow Brighton midfielder Alexis Mac Allister his column on Monday: “Despite signing a new contract in October that secured him until 2025, there is a good chance the midfielder will be sold and there has been lots of debate about whether or not the deal includes a release clause.

“It is understood the terms do, indeed, contain a mechanism which can be used to help facilitate a move and that has contributed to the level of interest building to prise Mac Allister from Brighton.

“This is thought not to be a typical release clause other clubs may simply trigger, leaving the player to choose their next step, but a more complex feature that gives Brighton a say over the outcome.

“As a result, the situation is not a foregone conclusion and there is no agreement in place for Mac Allister to leave the Amex Stadium. Although that could well materialise — the same applies to team-mate Moises Caicedo — but firm decisions are unlikely to be made until the campaign ends.”

This may hand Arsenal, and perhaps long-time admirers Chelsea, some fresh hope before the summer window officially opens despite the length remaining on his contract.

Caicedo recently admitted that he was “really close” to moving and “suffered a lot” following his failed transfer to north London in the winter.
