Barcelona legend-turned-manager Xavi has expressed his adoration for the Premier League’s new leaders, and says a Manchester City treble is deserving of the ‘best team in the world.’

A former disciple of Pep Guardiola, Xavi has enjoyed his own fair share of success this season after guiding his beloved Barcelona to the brink of domestic success, with the La Liga champions elect 11 points clear at the summit with six left to play.

Towards the end of his press conference on Monday, questions from reporters diverted the attention away from their imminent title success, and instead chose to focus on his former boss’ pursuit of a first ever club treble at Manchester City.

Despite an uncharacteristically slow start this season, the Cityzens have capitalised on a stuttering Arsenal side to leapfrog them in the Premier League table, and edge closer to a third successive triumph.

They will also face Real Madrid in a repeat of last season’s Champions League semi-final, before going toe-to-toe with neighbours Manchester United at the beginning of June in this year’s FA Cup final.

Asked if he believes City winning a trifecta of trophies would be deserved, Xavi replied: “Yes, it would be. For me it’s the best team in the world.”

He continued, admitting that the Premier League champions have set the benchmark for the style of football Barcelona attempt to play.

“They have the best coach and for us, the football they play, is a mirror to look at. It would be a very fair treble,” he said.

The former midfield maestro also had time to answer questions Barca’s task at hand, and says winning a first league title since the 2018-19 season would be a momentous step forward as the club rebuilds in the midst of financial uncertainty.

“It’s not a miracle but it’s a high-level merit to be where we are at.

“We are in a process of construction. We need to build, and this league is very important for the club. I think we have competed very well.

“We made good signings so it’s not a miracle. But we said in preseason that we were going to win the title and we are on our way.”
