We saw the Christian Williams-trained Kitty’s Light winning last weekend’s Scottish Grand National at Ayr, but the improving staying chaser could be out again as soon as this Saturday, as he holds an entry in the bet365 Gold Cup at Sandown.

Kitty’s Light Eyes Famous Scottish National and bet365 Gold Cup Double

The Christian Williams yard landed their second Scottish Grand National in as many years last Saturday when Kitty’s Light justified her place at the head of the market to win the Ayr race by 3 lengths (watch below).

He’s still only a 7 year-old but has already had 29 career runs, so is certainly well experienced for his age – winning 6 times.

However, racegoers could get the chance to see him in action again as soon as this Saturday as his connections are plotting a famous staying chase double inside a week.

He’s been put in as the 9/2 favourite for the race by sponsors bet365, should he run in his 30th career race.

Kitty’s Light is entered in Saturday’s bet365 Gold Cup, which is the showcase race on the cracking Sandown Park card that features the bet365 Celebration Chase too.

The fixture is also the final meeting of the 2022/23 National Hunt season.

Kitty’s Light Ran In Both Races Last Year Too

Running in both the Scottish National and the bet365 Gold Cup isn’t uncommon for Kitty’s Light either. The 7 year-old took in both races 12 months ago too – running second in the National and third in the Gold Cup.

However, it’s worth pointing out that there was a three-week gap between the two races in 2022, whereas this year it’s just a week.

Hot Weld Was the Last Horse To Win Both Races In The Same Season

Winning both the Scottish Grand National and Saturday’s bet365 Gold Cup in the same season has also been done recently.

It was only in 2007 that the Ferdy Murphy-trained Hot Weld landed the big-race double – and guess what? The races that year were also only a week apart!

Rider PJ McDonald, who is now a flat jockey, rode Hot Weld to win the Scottish National and it was another jockey that switched to the flat that steered him home in the bet365 Gold Cup – Graham Lee.

Last Year’s bet365 Winner Hewick Could Also Be Back For More

The last back-to-back winner of the bet365 Gold Cup was Topsham Bay in 1992 and 1993, so Hewick, who won the race 12 months ago, will be trying to break that run of 30 years (watch below).

Since Topsham Bay, the Paul Nicholls-trained Ad Hoc also won the bet365 Gold Cup twice but not in consecutive seasons.

The 8 year-old bargain buy won the Sandown race in 2022 by 8 lengths and was last seen running well in the Cheltenham Gold Cup before falling heavily 2 fences out.

He’s also won the American Grand National this season, when taking that Grade One, which is run over hurdles back in October.

Hewick will be running off a 19lb higher mark than last year, but note – he’s also entered in Wednesday’s Punchestown Gold Cup.
