Greatest Bayern Munich Comebacks in Europe

Overturning a three-goal deficit against the most in-form side on the continent appears to be a monumental uphill task, but the Champions League has a strong history of unthinkable comebacks, particularly in recent editions. However, with Manchester City heading to Bavaria with a 3-0 first leg advantage we are focusing on the greatest Bayern Munich comebacks in Europe ahead of this evening.

Thomas Tuchel’s first Champions League fixture in charge of Die Bayern proved to be a baptism of fire as a rampant Manchester City picked apart their opponents in the second-half.

It leaves the Bundesliga champions, who have failed to win in four of their previous six games in all competitions, on the cusp of a quarter-final exit for the third consecutive season.

They will hope to pluck inspiration from some of the more dramatic comebacks that have defined recent editions of this competition – Liverpool’s 4-0 to erase Barcelona first-leg win 2019, Real Madrid’s ability to dig deep last year in each of their knockout games, or perhaps most pertinent of all, Barcelona’s 6-1 La Remontada against PSG five years ago.

Are Bayern Munich capable of Der Comeback this evening?

Greatest Bayern Munich Comebacks in Europe

Bayern Munich vs Juventus – 2015/16

The date of this particular tie took us by surprise when flicking through Bayern’s greatest comebacks – it feels like only yesterday Thomas Muller poked in the injury time equaliser.

After a frantic 2-2 draw in Turin, Pep Guardiola‘s side walked away with the narrowest of margins given the away goal rule was still in effect at this time (now abolished).

The return leg in Munich opened with a flurry of goals from the Italians as both Paul Pogba and Juan Cuadrado netted within the first half an hour, to hand the away side an unassailable lead.

It wasn’t until Robert Lewandowski’s 73rd minute booster that the Germans really looked like mounting a comeback, but Thomas Muller’s equaliser deep into injury time levelled the tie at 4-4 on aggregate, before Thiago and Kingsley Coman secured an emphatic round of 16 comeback.

Bayern Munich vs Porto – 2014/15

It seemed inconceivable that a side who had been so dominant in Germany (second-lowest goals allowed in their history that season) could be dismantled by Porto in the way they did.

The first-leg of this quarter-final tie in Portugal saw Bayern fall to a hugely underwhelming 3-1 defeat, leaving many questioning whether Guardiola was fit to lead them to European glory – as history would reveal, the naysayers would be proven correct.

However, they would secure progression to the final four after a staggering turnaround in Munich, firing two goals within the first 20 minutes to level the score, before surviving a late Jackson Martinez scare to round off a 6-1 win on the night and a 7-4 triumph across the tie.

Bayern Munich vs Real Madrid – 2006/07

These two European heavyweights have faced off in some of the competition’s most dramatic ties, but the 2006/07 season saw the Germans prevail in a remarkable second-leg showing at the Allianz.

Although they would be knocked out by eventual winners AC Milan in the last eight, this knockout tie witnessed an enthralling first-leg in Madrid where Los Blancos ran out eventual 3-2 victors courtesy of a stirring performance from Raul, whose brace proved to be the difference.

However, a favoured star-studded Real side boasting the likes of Fabio Cannavaro, David Beckham and Ruud Van Nistelrooy were stunned within the first 10 seconds of the second-leg.

Roy Maakay levelled the tie with the quickest Champions League goal after just 10.12 seconds, before legendary defender Lucio popped up with a crucial goal with 25 minutes to play. Although Van Nistelrooy’s late penalty had Bayern fans quaking in their boost, the Germans eventually secured safe passage to the next round on away goals.
