There could be a new wonder horse in town as the Japanese-trained Equinox is fast making a name for himself across the globe after an impressive 3 1/2 length win in the 2023 Sheema Classsic.
Can Japanese Superstar Equinox Be The New Flightline?
Japan raided the recent lucrative Dubai World Cup fixture with a stack of runners and they didn’t disappoint to make the long journey pay off.
The equine stars from the Far East mopped-up a 1-2-3-4 in the UAE Derby and also took the ‘big one’ – the Dubai World Cup with Ushba Tesoro.
However, is was the 4 year-old EQUINOX that also grabbed plenty of the Dubai World Cup night headlines. The next big talking horse around the world was a facile success in the Sheema Classic.
Winning £2.9m for his connections in the process.
The Tesuya Kimura-trained colt broke well and was never headed in the race to eventually power away to beat last year’s easy Irish Derby winner Westover by 3 1/2 lengths.
That was the horses fifth career win (from 7) and has now won his last three – all Grade One’s at the highest level. Plus, Equinox has already amassed over £8m in total prize money from his five career wins.
With the winning machine from last season – Flightline – now retired – the racing world is looking for its new big superstar, so could Equinox fill the void?

Could The Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe Be an Option For Equinox
Yes, there are many big races Equinox could target in his homeland this season, but the Prix de l’ Arc de Triomphe has always been a prize Japan would love to win. Over the years they’ve sent many horses to try and land Europe’s most valuable middle distance race but are so far yet to succeed.
The best horse racing betting sites in the UK are pricing Equinox up as the 7/1 favourite for the 2023 Arc, which will be run this year on Sunday 1st October. A price that might tempt many in after watching back his easy Sheema Classic win (see below).
The horse is also ridden by top French jockey Christophe Lemaire, which might help his Arc bid. However, of course, the race is a long way off and the horse would have to be a confirmed target before punters might wade into that price with more confidence.
