Australian tennis legend Paul McNamee believes that the ‘king of clay’ and compatriot Nadal will be Alcaraz’s biggest challenger, but the reigning US Open champion has an iron-clad ground stroke game, duplicitous drop shot ability and the fighting spirit that combine to make the perfect clay competitor.
Although the world rankings fluctuate hugely throughout the season, Nadal dropped out of the top 10 for the first time in nearly two decades following a stuttering campaign plagued by injuries in recent months, but no one in their right mind would count out the 36-year-old.
Alcaraz is firmly poised for a second Grand Slam title this summer, whether it be at the French, Wimbledon or perhaps a second in the US, but his meteoric rise at such a young age is scarily similar to a fresh-faced Nadal way back in 2005, and the supremely talented teen is primed to end the seven-year Djokovic-Nadal monopoly over Roland-Garros.
