Players Championship Purse Breakdown: 2023 Sees Record-Setting $25 Million Pool

Players Championship Purse Breakdown

The 48th Players Championship gets underway on Thursday, and this year’s edition in Florida features the largest purse of 2023 with the 144-man field all battling it out for a record-breaking winner reward. With that in mind, we are dissecting this year’s total money pool and providing you with a full Players Championship purse breakdown.

The effect of LIV Golf is all too evident for this year’s Players Championship, with Cameron Smith the first defending champion to miss the tournament since Tiger Woods almost a decade ago.

Nevertheless, a slightly fractured tournament still features a strong field of competitors that will be vying for a slice of the biggest purse of the year, but also the highest total ever seen at golf‘s ‘fifth major,’ as it is affectionately known.

Aside from the winner’s prize money increasing by almost $1 million on last year, they can expect to receive 80 points towards their world ranking – for context that is the next-best share outside the 100-point majors.

Exemptions are also in order for eventual victor; the next three PGA Championships, three-year exemptions at the Open and the US Open, as well as a five years on the PGA Tour.

How Much Does the Winner Receive?

There is very little to split the pre-tournament favourites at the time of writing – Rory McIlroy will be aiming to add to his $44.5m prize money earnings in 2022 with another monumental payday here; him and Scottish Scheffler are both handed a price of 10/1.

Meanwhile John Rahm will be hoping to bounce back from a dismal at Bay Hill after losing 6.23 strokes off the tee; the Spaniard is 11/1.

Plenty of other in-form competitors will be hoping to pip the frontrunners to the title, and this year’s winner prize money total stands at $4.5 million.

What About the Rest of the Field?

It isn’t all doom and gloom for nearest challengers, in fact it quite the opposite. The eventual runner-up will receive a $2.75m share of the purse, while all of the top five finishers can expect to be rewarded with over $1m.
