Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard has revealed why he was not given a fair chance at his former side Real Madrid and claims he would’ve received more support ‘if i’d have been Spanish’.

Martin Odegaard first burst onto the scene when Real Madrid brought him to Spain at only 15 years of age, following an impressive spell at Stromsgodset. The midfielder was on Madrid’s books for just under six years, where he spent time on loan at Heerenveen, Vitesse, Real Sociedad and his eventual buyers, Arsenal.

The Norwegian has been a revelation at Arsenal and has been one of the Premier League’s best players this season, contributing hugely to the Gunners first title push in over a decade. He has been involved in 13 goals in 19 league matches.

The 26-year-old has picked up the armband under Mikel Arteta and after a difficult time in Madrid, Odegaard has finally reached his potential. However, he still had plenty to say about his tenure in Spain and claims he may have been given more time if he was Spanish.

Odegaard said: “I remember reading a headline like: NOW IT’S MAKE OR BREAK TIME FOR MARTIN ODEGAARD. And I’m like, make or break? I’m 18 years old!”

“Maybe If I’d been Spanish, I might have been given a bit more time to grow. Honestly, I don’t know. In the end, it’s just the nature of the hype machine.”

Los Blancos might not be best pleased with these comments and with Arsenal destined for the Champions League next season, we may see the two clash after-all.
