Manchester United are reportedly set to make a move for Inter Milan defender and free-agent Stefan de Vrij, as Erik Ten Hag looks to bolster his side.

The January transfer window has been rather uneventful for Manchester United, signing only two players on loan. Jack Butland from Crystal Palace and Wout Weghorst from Championship side Burnley, are the only additions so far, meaning Ten Hag is looking at some last-minute reinforcements.

The Dutch international will be a free agent this summer and is now available to sign on a pre-contract agreement elsewhere. According to reports, the Red Devils are one of the sides interested in bringing the defender in, with de Vrij believed to be making his decision in February.

This signing could be the beginning of the end for Harry Maguire, who has been out-of-favour for large parts of this season. Ten Hag has made it clear by his tam selection that Maguire is not part of his plans, making the England international 3/1 to join Aston Villa, per UK betting sites.

De Vrij has made 13 appearances this season, with Inter sitting at the top of the league. The Italian side have a lot of defensive talent, Milan Škriniar and Alessandro Bastoni have made it difficult for de Vrij to get a run of games. Combine this with his current contract situation, it may be time for a change of scenery.
