BANNTOWN GIRL has only scored once from 11 starts and that was when flattered under patient tactics when the pace collapsed in a ladies pro/am bumper back in July 2021. She was beaten by 16 lengths into second place in a two-mile chase here last time and, with the ground slower than preferred, she looks vulnerable on her return to hurdles. The Racing Post has put her in their betting forecast as the 7-4 favourite and she looks a value sell in the Spreadex 50-25-10 market.

William Knight’s six-year-old KING OF THE SOUTH found only the progressive Base Note (winner again at Lingfield yesterday) too good in an extended 1m4f handicap at Wolverhampton last time and will be hoping to get back in the winners’ enclosure now returned to his favourite track. His Newcastle record stands at 1121311 (5-7) including two from two over course and distance, as compared to 533271124652 (2-12) at other venues. The booking of top jockey Jamie Spencer takes the eye, he’s made a tremendous start to the new year with three winners and three seconds from his last seven rides (at the time of writing), including a victory on the yard’s filly Lordsbridge Girl at Kempton last week, and makes the long journey north for one ride. He has solid claims on his return to Newcastle and can be bought in the Spreadex 50-25-10 market or backed in the fixed odds betting.

CHELMSFORD 5.30
DARK DESIGN joined the Henry Spiller yard from Denise Foster last winter and scored at the first time of asking for his new connections when successful over today’s course and distance. Stevie Donohoe gave the gelding an inspired ride that day- dropped out early from his wide draw, he was still last on the turn for home but threaded his way through the field under tender handling before being pushed out for a cosy success. Similar tactics may be needed this afternoon as the conditions for this ‘Hands And Heels’ apprentice handicap require the jockey to win without resorting to the whip. I’m happy to forgive his latest sixth of 11 over course and distance, as he was badly hampered by a rival on leaving the stalls and ran a little flat. Expect a better performance today with conditions to suit and he can be bought in the Spreadex 50-25-10 market or supported in the fixed odds betting.
