2022 Becher Chase Trends For Aintree Race
Use our key Becher Chase Trends to find the best winning profile of past winners. Apply these stats to the Aintree runners to see which horses have the best chance of winning based on history.
70% Of The Last 20 Winners Aged 9 Or Younger
A decent stat to get going that should hopefully knock a fair few out, with 14 of the last 20 Becher Chase winners aged 9 or younger. This would be a negative for last year’s winner Snow Leopardess, who is 10 now, plus Cloth Cap, past Coral Gold Cup winner De Rasher Counter and Fagan.
80% Of Recent Winners (last 20 years) Carried 10st 12lbs or Less
Next up is to look at the weight carried as 16 of the last 20 Becher Chase winners had 10st 12lbs or less on their backs.
There are 23 horses entered for Saturday’s race, so the weight cut-off point based on this stat actually only sees four horses fit the bill – Now Where Or When, Percussion, Didero Vallis and Minella Bobo – while Domaine De L’Isle and Five Star Getaway are only outside this stat by a pound.
When Was The Last Back-to-Back Becher Chase Winner?
12 months ago, we saw the popular grey, Snow Leopardess get the better of Hill Sixteen (who runs again too) by just a nose and the Charlie Longsdon runner is back to defend her title.
But when was the last horse to win the Becher Chase in back-to-back years? Actually, it was fairly recently with Walk In The Mill landing the spoils in 2018 and 2019.
Before that, we saw Hello Bud win the race in 2012 and 2010, while Vieux Lion Rouge (2016 & 2020) and Into The Red (1994 & 1996) have also won the race twice, but Walk In The Mill is the only Becher Chase winner in consecutive seasons.
Previous Experience Of The Grand National Fences Is Key
Another decent trend to have onside is to look for horses that have run over the tricky Grand Natioinal-style fences, so it’s no surprise that runners that have tasted the obstacles in the past have had a slight advantage.
Of the those heading to post in 2022, these are the horses that have run over the Grand National fences before – De Rasher Counter, Francky Du Berlais, Snow Leopardess, Hill Sixteen, Fortescue, Cloth Cap, Gesskille, Domaine De L’Isle, Five Star Getaway, Percussion and Didero Vallis.
75% Of The Last 20 Winners Had Raced In The Last 2 Months
Next up is to look for a recent run, with 15 of the last 20 Becher Chase winners having run in the last 7 weeks. Most fit the bill here, but those that are returning from a break are Fagan and The Jam Man.

Respect The Nigel Twiston-Davies Yard
Over the years, we’ve seen the David Pipe (2020 & 2016) and Paul Nicholls (2004, 2006 & 2007) yards on the Becher Chase roll of honour, but it’s the Nigel Twiston-Davies stable that have by far the best record in modern times.
NTD has mopped-up six Becher Chase wins over the years – with the first coming in 1993 with Indian Tonic. He added Young Hustler (1995) and then former Grand National winner Earth Summit to his haul in 1998 before the turn of the century.
Then, more recently, he’s chipped in with three more successes in the race with Hello Bud (2010 & 2012) and Blaklion (2017) being his last winner.
Twiston-Davies runs Fantastikas this year in 2022, while David Pipe and Paul Nicholls don’t have runners this time.
How Have The Recent Favourites Fared?
Considering the competitive nature of the Becher Chase most years and the tough Grand National-style fences to tackle, it’s not been too bad a race for the market leaders. Over the last 20 runnings, we’ve had 5 winning Becher Chase favourites win the race (25% strike-rate).
We’ve also had 9 placed jollies over that 20-year period too. This year it’s tight at the top of the betting, with the Dan Skelton-trained Ashtown Lad and the recent Grand Sefton Chase runner-up Gesskille disputing the favourites berth.
