Paddy Power Gold Cup Trends For Cheltenham Race
ALL Of The Last 20 Winners Had Run At Cheltenham Before
Cheltenham has always been a big ‘horses for courses’ track and with ALL of the last 20 Paddy Power Gold Cup winners having raced at Prestbury Park in the past this is a big plus. Add in that 70% of the last 20 winners had also WON at Cheltenham, then proving winning form at the home of jumps racing is another positive to look for.
19 Of The Last 20 Winners Came From UK-based Yards
Okay, not many Irish trainers have sent horses over for this early-season handicap, but with the Mouse Morris yard potentially having the likely favourite in French Dynamite, this is maybe something to keep an eye on this year. The last Irish-trained winner of the Paddy Power Gold Cup was Tranquil Sea in 2009.
70% Of The Last 20 Paddy Power Gold Cup Winners Carried 11st Or Less
12 months ago, we saw the Sue Smith-trained Midnight Shadow lump 11st 5lbs to victory (watch below), but in recent times 14 of the last 20 winners had 11st or less on their backs.
Since 2013 (9 races), we’ve had 7 winners aged carrying 11st or less, so really this looks the safe weight cut-off point despite last year’s winner defying the trend.
A Top Four Finish Last Time Out Is A Plus
Coming into form off the back of a recent ‘top four’ finish is another key Paddy Power Gold Cup trend to look for. 70% of the last 20 winners were placed in the first four in their most recent race and even though most will fit the bill here, we should still be able to knock some out.
6 and 7 Year-Olds Have The Best Recent Records
The last three successful horses have been aged 8 (2) and 9 (1), but with 12 of the last 20 winners aged 6 or 7 these ages have just about edged it in recent times. Or, if you want to play the age trend a bit safer, then the last double-figure aged winner was in 1975 – which would be a negative for the 2020 winner Coole Cody, who is 11, if lining up again. Watch Coole Cody winning below.
Just 3 Winning Favourites In The Last 20 Runnings
Not a great race for the market leaders as we’ve only had the Paddy Power Gold Cup favourite win the race three times in the last 20 runnings, and the last of those was Tranquil Sea in 2009.
Therefore, we are on a run of 12 years with no winning Paddy Power Gold Cup favourite taking the race.
Respect The Paul Nicholls and Pipe Yards
In recent times, the Evan Williams (2022), Gary Moore (2018) and Alan King (2015) yards have won the Paddy Power Gold Cup, while Nigel Twiston-Davies and Jonjo O’Neill have good records too, but don’t look to have any runners this year.
However, the other stable to look for is the Paul Nicholls camp, having landed the spoils in 2012 (Al Ferof) and 2014 (Caid Du Berlais). The Dicheat handler has also saddled 11 placed horses from his last 43 runners in the Paddy Power Gold Cup and had another hit the frame 12 months ago with Lalor coming third. At this stage, Nicholls has Simply The Betts and Il Ridoto entered.
The Pipe team are another yard to have in your sights. They’ve got their horses in good form too, with many winners over the last weeks and even though David Pipe has only won the race once (Great Endeavour, 2011), his dad, Martin, took the Paddy Power ‘gold medal’ 8 times and is the most successful trainer in the race’s history.
