A Brief History of Doncaster Racecourse

Doncaster races today

Despite the town corporation best’s efforts to stop race meetings at the dawn of the 17th century, Doncaster Racecourse was marked out in 1614. Records show horse racing on Town Moor taking place since the 1500s, the 16th century. Another nearby venue, Cantley Common, was also used including for the first decade of the Doncaster Cup (then Doncaster Gold Cup) since its inauguration in 1766.

A dozen years later, the biggest of Doncaster races today, the St Leger Stakes was first held on Town Moor and has remained there ever since. Going all the way back to its inauguration in 1776, this is the oldest Classic Flat racing event for three-year-old colts and fillies in the world. The St Leger predates the Epsom Derby, The Oaks and the Newmarket Classics, the 1000 and 2000 Guineas.

Doncaster Racecourse is one of nine race tracks and racecourses for horse racing within the historic boundaries of the White Rose county of Yorkshire. Of those, it is the only one in South Yorkshire with Beverley in the East Riding, Pontefract and Wetherby in the West, and Catterick Bridge, Redcar, Ripon, Thirsk and York races in the North.

Configuration of Doncaster Races Today

Best described as pear shaped, Doncaster Racecourse hosts both Flat racing from March until November and National Hunt action during the winter months. Home to the Lincoln Handicap since 1965 when Lincoln Racecourse closed, there is a straight mile track used for that race and the Group 1 Kameko Futurity Trophy for two-year-olds.

A left-handed but fairly flat track that suits strong galloping types, there are some similarities with Newbury races as a full circuit of the round course is almost two miles long. The St Leger is virtually one full lap of Doncaster starting at the beginning of the back straight, then turning down the side of the course up Rose Hill and round the home bend onto a run-in of four-and-a-half furlongs.

Thee are seven obstacles on the hurdles track with three in the back straight. There is also a cross hurdle about a mile from the finish and three more in the home straight with a very short run-in after the final flight. Steeplechasers at Doncaster races today have 11 fences to jump on a complete circuit, meanwhile.

The third of four in the back straight and middle one of three on Rose Hill are open ditches. There are four plain fences jumped in about half-a-mile down the long home straight. A water jump roughly adjacent to the St Leger start at the top of the back straight ensures there are a variety of obstacles on a full circuit of chase course, and this makes for a fair test.

Key Doncaster Racecourse Events & Fixtures

There are now seven key and prestigious racing meetings in the horse racing calendar held on Town Moor. Due to a shift in the pattern races over jumps away from Doncaster in recent years, the majority of these are for the Flat racing season. The biggest event is the four-day St Leger Festival in September, which now runs from Thursday to Sunday in the middle of the month.

Away from the biggest race at Doncaster Racecourse, there are two more important meetings in the autumn. These are a two-day fixture headlined by the Kameko Futurity Trophy, a Group 1 for two-year-olds in October, and the Flat Grand Finale a couple of weeks later.

Doncaster races today are also the scene of the beginning of the Flat turf since with the Lincoln Handicap card happening in late March or early April. Key jumps horse races, meanwhile, remain the Great Yorkshire Chase that has Premier Handicap status and is run in late January, plus the Grimthorpe Chase either at the end of February or beginning of March.

Great Yorkshire Chase Weekend

The last Saturday in January is the biggest of racedays over jumps for Doncaster horse racing today. Headlining this card is the SBK Great Yorkshire Chase, a three-mile handicap race run until 2024 as the Sky Bet Chase for sponsorship reasons. A Premier Handicap over three miles, there are 18 fences for steeplechasers to jump.

Supporting the feature contest are two Grade 2 races at Doncaster today. Two of those are recognised Cheltenham Festival trials, which is fitting. Dating back to 1948, the Great Yorkshire Chase takes place on the same day as the official Festival Trials Day at Cheltenham Racecourse. These are all the main races from the card:

Lincoln Handicap Day

One of the special things about Doncaster races today is the venue hosts both the first and last days of the British Flat turf season. Kicking things off on the last Saturday in March is the Lincoln Handicap card. Like many Heritage Handicaps including the Ayr Gold Cup at Ayr races today, the Lincoln for older horses over the straight mile has a consolation race for horses balloted out of the maximum field of 22.

The supporting card contains a couple of Listed races that help sprinters and milers tune up for bigger targets later in the spring or early summer. The Brocklesby Stakes, meanwhile, is the first juvenile Flat race of the year with two-year-olds sprinting along Town Moor. Here are details of all the important races from Lincoln Handicap day:

Kameko Futurity Trophy Meeting

The Kameko Futurity Trophy is the other contest at Doncaster races today with Group 1 status. Known by many previous names including the Timeform Gold Cup and Racing Post Trophy, this juvenile contest over the straight mile in October has implications for the future. The race has proved a good Classic trial for the following season’s 2000 Guineas at Newmarket races, especially in recent years.

As the feature race of a two-day meeting towards the end of October, the Kameko Futurity Trophy takes place after British Champions Day at Ascot. This is the final Group 1 of the UK Flat turf season but not the last meeting on grass. The table below contains key races from across the Friday and Saturday cards:

Virgin Bet Grand Finale of the British Flat Season

Chocolate Family Fun Day at Doncaster Racecourse – Yorkshire Silver Vase Mares’ Chase

Although it’s fair to say there are more prestigious races on Town Moor than those held in-between Christmas and New Year, one thing the track has embraced in more recent years is its programme for fillies and mares. The horse racing fixture three days after boxing day has a Listed event for them over fences. This is the Yorkshire Silver Vase Mares’ Chase run at an extended two-and-a-half mile. Other Races at Doncaster Today

There are also other notable events at Doncaster outside of the main race fixtures. As noted above in late February or early March, the Grimthorpe Chase – an old Grand National trial – happens on Town Moor. This an alternative to the official Grand National Trial at Haydock Park in February where the ground is often very testing. The Grimthorpe gives Aintree hopefuls the chance of potentially better going.
