Cheltenham Day 1 Tips – Champion Hurdle Day

Cheltenham Tips

Action at Cheltenham this year gets underway on Tuesday 12th March. Known as Champion Day, day 1 features four Grade 1 races. The Supreme Novices’ Hurdle, Arkle Challenge Trophy, Champion Hurdle and Mares’ Hurdle are among the races to attract the interest of punters. For many, Champion Day is the most enjoyable of the entire festival. It should therefore not be a surprise that Cheltenham day 1 tips are very much in demand.

Champion Day Races

  • Sky Bet Supreme Novices’ Hurdle (Grade 1)
  • Arkle Challenge Trophy Novices’ Chase (Grade 1)
  • Ultima Handicap Chase (Premier Handicap)
  • Unibet Champion Hurdle (Grade 1)
  • Close Brothers Mares’ Hurdle (Grade 1)
  • Boodles Juvenile Handicap Hurdle (Premier Handicap)
  • Maureen Mullins National Hunt Chase (Grade 2)

Supreme Novices’ Hurdle

Starting with the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle, which is seen as a breeding ground for future stars, Cheltenham Tuesday tips indicate leading Irish owner JP McManus will have a strong hand in the race. Moscow Flyer winner Mystical Power catapulted himself into contention with that Punchestown success for Willie Mullins. As a son of late super sire Galileo and Champion Hurdle hero Annie Power, Mystical Power should prove popular with long-term fans of the sport.

McManus also calls on Nicky Henderson’s Jeriko Du Reponet, a dual Newbury winner who wasn’t convincing when landing the hat-trick in the Grade 2 Rossington Main rearranged for Doncaster races at the end of January. Mullins has five other Supreme hopefuls, which also include Cheveley Park Stud runner Tullyhill and Mistergif.

Gordon Elliott has Firefox, who beat Ballyburn at Fairyhouse, and now drops back in trip. Henry De Bromhead saddles Robcour runner Slade Steel keen to swerve Ballyburn, who goes for a longer distance race on Style Wednesday. Other British prospects Tellherthename and Favour And Fortune are big prices to get in amongst the Irish.

Verdict: Two of the Mullins sextet look ahead of the rest, and they are Mystical Power and Tullyhill.

Arkle Chase

Irish trainers seem to have a complete stranglehold on the Arkle Challenge Trophy Novices’ Chase betting. All Cheltenham tips centre on them as a result. Barry Connell stable star Marine Nationale triumphed at the Festival last season in the Supreme. He made an impressive start to life over fences, but misses the meeting with a setback.

Willie Mullins saddles three serious contenders in Gaelic WarriorHunters Yarn and Il Etait Temps. This trio haven’t had much luck at this Festival as yet but all that could change. Henry De Bromhead’s Quilixios, who won the Triumph Hurdle here three years ago, and Found A Fifty for Gordon Elliott complete the Irish names dominating the Arkle market.

Outstayed in the Drinmore, dropping back in trip yielded Grade 1 glory at Leopardstown in the Racing Post Novice Chase over Christmas. Found A Fifty again found one too good in the Irish Arkle when Il Etait Temps got up to beat him by a neck during the Dublin Racing Festival.

Credible British contenders are thin on ground with JPR One, unlucky to fall in front at the final fence with the official Arkle Trial at his mercy at the November Meeting, perhaps the best. Joe Tizzard’s charge made up for that when landing the Grade 2 Lightning Novices’ Chase during the Winter Million Lingfield races midway through January.

Verdict: If the Gaelic Warrior of his first two starts over fences turns up in the same form, he’s the one to beat. Il Etait Temps has something to find with his stablemate on their Limerick Grade 1 meeting over Christmas.

Champion Hurdle

The Champion Hurdle is the focus of attention for many when it comes to Cheltenham day 1 tips, but the division is not competitive. Coming with a total prize pool of £450,000 and £253,000 for the winner, it was impossible to see past Constitution Hill defending his crown until illness rule him out. Unbeaten under Rules, there will be no third consecutive Cheltenham Festival victory for the Nicky Henderson stable star.

Last year’s second State Man is now an odds-on favourite and the leading Irish contender for the Champion Hurdle. He sits at the top of a clear pecking order in the Mullins stable with Lossiemouth going for the Mares’ Hurdle and Zarak The Brave running as the stable second string instead.

Other credible contenders look somewhat thin on the ground, but Irish Point switches targets from the Stayers’ Hurdle as owners Robcour have another trained by Gordon Elliott for that race. Outside of the first two in the betting, any other winner would represent a below-par Champion Hurdle.

Nicky Henderson has supplemented Iberico Lord for the race, but it still demands further improvement. Wincanton Grade 2 winner Nemean Lion needs to find more and the veteran Not So Sleepy has finished no better than fifth in previous editions.

Verdict: There’s simply no opposing State Man on all known form, but a long odds-on favourite isn’t exactly value. It remains to be seen if the absence of Constitution Hill tempts connections of other horses into a tilt at Champion Hurdle glory.

Mares’ Hurdle

Mullins has a typically strong hand for the 2m 4f Mares’ Hurdle once again. Leading contenders include last season’s Ttiumph Hurdle 1-2 Lossiemouth and Gala Marceau. Both have been minded since the spring with the latter becoming champion four-year-old hurdler in France. Lossiemouth heads the betting after gaining more winning Cheltenham experience on Festival Trials Day.

Ashroe Diamond is another for the yard who will be popular off the back of her Honeysuckle Mares Novice Hurdle triumph at Fairyhouse last Easter and Yorkshire Rose success at Doncaster. What this division has is a definite changing of the guard. Gone are the great Honeysuckle and long-time rival Epatante with both retired to the paddocks.

Leading British contenders that all Cheltenham tips must consider include last year’s runner-up, Love Envoi, for Harry Fry, albeit she was put in her place by Lossiemouth. Nicky Henderson inmate Marie’s Rock won this two years ago, while the 2023 Dawn Run heroine You Wear It Well has this as a logical target after trying even further.

Verdict: If Lossiemouth builds or even replicates her impressive reappearance in the International Hurdle, then she has too much class for her fellow females having swerved the Champion Hurdle.

National Hunt Chase

Corbetts Cross, who crashed out through the wing of the final hurdle in the Albert Bartlett, will be popular among Cheltenham tips for the 3m 6f National Hunt Chase for novices over fences. Emmet Mullins’ charge can atone for that dramatic exit and an unlucky fall when another horse jumped into him during his prep race.

Mullins runs the stamina laden Embassy Gardens here after landing a Grade 3 up the hill at Naas. Gordon Elliott has Salvador Ziggy in the line-up, while Reynoldstown 1-2-3 Henry’s Friend, Kilbeg King and Apple Away all take each other on again after finishing in a heap at Ascot.

Verdict: With the race named in honour of his late mother, Mullins and amateur jockey son Patrick will be desperate to win it with Embassy Gardens. If completing, then Corbetts Cross has clear and obvious claims for another relative Emmet and powerful owner JP McManus.

Cheltenham Day 2 Tips – Style Wednesday

Cheltenham TipsFormerly known as Ladies Day, Style Wednesday is on 13 March this year, with the Queen Mother Champion Chase standing out from the four Grade 1s on the card and seven events on the track in total. Chief supporting races, but valuable and prestigious in their own right are the Ballymore Novices’ Hurdle, Brown Advisory Novices’ Chase and Weatherbys Champion Bumper – the latter being a National Hunt Flat race where no obstacles are jumped.

Style Wednesday Races

  • Gallagher Novices’ Hurdle (Grade 1)
  • Brown Advisory Novices’ Chase (Grade 1)
  • Coral Cup Handicap Hurdle (Premier Handicap)
  • Betway Queen Mother Champion Chase (Grade 1)
  • Glenfarclas Cross Country Chase (Class 2) – ABANDONED
  • Grand Annual Handicap Chase (Premier Handicap)
  • Weatherbys Champion Bumper (Grade 1)

Baring Bingham / Gallagher Novices’ Hurdle

Cheltenham Wednesday tips would be nothing without discussing the opening race. Best known as the Ballymore Novices’ Hurdle, its registered title is the Baring Bingham. Mullins has many of the market leaders in his Closutton stables. Ballyburn may breeze up in this race, but so could surprise Lawlor’s Of Naas winner Readin Tommy Wrong.

Aforementioned duo Mystical Power and Ile Atlantique could also go down this route. Gigginstown House Stud’s Predators Gold could also benefit from going up in trip as Mullins has a typically fearsome and strong hand. After coming through Festival Trials Day with success in the Classic Novices’ Hurdle, Gidleigh Park is a leading British hope for Harry Fry.

Champion Bumper third Captain Teague could also contest this after his Grade 1 Challow Hurdle success at Newbury races despite the form taking a knock. Another big British stable in the Nicky Henderson yard may unleash Jango Baie over this longer trip too. Much about the novice hurdle pecking order will be decided before the Festival.

Broadway / Brown Advisory Novices’ Chase

Elsewhere, the Brown Advisory Novices’ Chase looks like serving up a proper UK v Ireland clash this year. The market and Cheltenham tips both press the claims of Emerald Isle raider Fact To File, who has gone straight over fences from bumpers for the mighty Mullins.

The home team have strong contenders too, however, in the shape of Warwick races Grade 2 scorer Grey Dawning for the Skeltons and Stay Away Fay. As an Albert Bartlett winner, the latter trained by Paul Nicholls has the stamina and Cheltenham form over hurdles to make his presence felt. Outside of these names, the remainder have other options at the Festival.

Queen Mother Champion Chase

We’re guaranteed a new champion chaser on Style Wednesday with Energumene missing the entire season injured. In his absence, Cheltenham day 2 tips for the big race look to last year’s Arkle result for form. That has El Fabiolo a clear favourite and obvious pick to follow-up Mullins and owners Simon Munir and Isaac Souede.

Second on that occasion was the Celebration, Shloer and Tingle Creek winner Jonbon for Henderson and McManus, who needs to bounce back for his shock defeat in the Clarence House. The powerful owner has never tasted success in the Champion Chase and his wait for it may go on. Veterans Edwardstone and Editeur Du Gite aren’t getting any younger.

They look very vulnerable indeed to the youthful legs of the next generation. Captain Guinness has placed efforts in the Arkle and Champion Chase in years past, so might run well on a going day. Elixir De Nutz is the only older horse in the field to have posted improved form this season, so may be a better each way bet off the back of his Clarence House success.

Verdict: A repeat of his Arkle success sees El Fabiolo in front and Jonbon home in second. The remainder just aren’t on their level on all known form.

Cross Country Chase – ABANDONED

If you could guaranteed the Cross Country race being run on a sound surface, then Galvin would be the one to back. That hasn’t been the case at recent Festivals, however, so Cheltenham tips need to look at other Irish raiders. Delta Work is a dual winner of the race, so has to be on any shortlist. Conflated is yet another Gordon Elliott runner with major claims.

Outside of his Cullentra House stable, however, is former Gold Cup hero Minella Indo, who ran an eye-catching trial for this in a Cross Country handicap off topweight for Henry De Bromhead. The Irish contenders just keep on coming with Mouse Morris describing his hope Foxy Jacks as follows: “the better the ground, the better his chance”.

If Mullins doesn’t want his great rival Elliott have it all his own way, then it would be most interesting to try Stattler, whose name follows fellow Ronnie Bartlett horse Galvin on the National Hunt Chase roll of honour, in this race. It’s hard to see a British runner landing a blow off level weights with these. Many of the market principals have Grand National ambitions the following month.

Cheltenham Day 3 Tips – St Patrick’s Thursday

Cheltenham Tips

The two feature races on Thursday are the Ryanair Chase and Stayers’ Hurdle. There’s one other Grade 1 on the penultimate day’s card and that’s the Turners Novices’ Chase. Supporting these are three very valuable and competitive handicaps, including the Pertemps Final. This is the conclusion of a series of hurdle races contest over around three miles where competing horses must finish in the first four in order to qualify. There’s also a Grade 2 novice hurdle restricted to fillies and mares only held here

St Patrick’s Day Races

  • Golden Miller / Turners Novices’ Chase (Grade 1)
  • Pertemps Final Handicap Hurdle (Premier Handicap)
  • Ryanair Chase (Grade 1)
  • Paddy Power Stayers’ Hurdle (Grade 1)
  • Festival Plate Handicap Chase (Premier Handicap)
  • Dawn Run Mares’ Novices’ Hurdle (Grade 2)
  • Fulke Walwyn Kim Muir Challenge Cup Handicap Chase (Class 2)

Golden Miller / Turners Novices’ Chase

Cheltenham Thursday tips can’t start anywhere other than with Gaelic Warrior, who is looking to make it third time lucky at the Festival. Already having the Turners Novices’ Chase nominated as a target, his bow over fences was mightily impressive. It’s far from certain that French raider Il Est Francais will come over to the UK again, but he would be a threat if so.

Many of those lacking the speed and accurate jumping of fences needed for the Arkle end up in this race over an intermediate distance. In addition to Gaelic Warrior, Mullins could have Facile Vega stepping up in trip. Gordon Elliott may do likewise with Found A Fifty.

British stables have it all to do against such names, but Ginnys Destiny has good course form, multiple Cheltenham wins and could be each way value, especially in the event of soft going. Paul Nicholls stable companion Hermes Allen may also end up in the race, while JP McManus-owned Iroko has a race against time to be fit for the Festival.

Ryanair Chase

The Cheltenham tips on offer for the co-feature Ryanair Chase centred on dual race winner Allaho until his return from injury and bid to reclaim his crown faltered. In his absence, Banbridge heads the betting from the Joseph O’Brien stable. Provided he gets conditions to suit, i.e. good appearing in the going description, then he’s the one to beat.

Last year’s Turners winner Stage Star flopped on New Year’s Day in Premier Handicap company, but admittedly won the Paddy Power Gold Cup in style, although not without a bad mistake at the final fence. He will be back at the Festival for Paul Nicholls.

Envoi Allen won’t give up his crown without a fight and is now owners Cheveley Park Stud’s first string. Jonbon would be interesting if rerouted here, yet that’s unlikely at this stage. Bar these five, it’s very hard to see anything else troubling the judge. Pic D’Orhy has been kept away from Cheltenham throughout his career, yet has an entry.

Verdict: Banbridge is a ground dependent horse but, apart from that, has the least questions to answer. Envoi Allen will now be all systems go in a bid to win back-to-back editions.

Stayers’ Hurdle

Cheltenham day 3 tips centre on the Stayers’ Hurdle which has a very open look to it once again this season. Gordon Elliott and owners Robcour have the strongest hand courtesy of Teahupoo and Irish Point. Chances are that we won’t see either of them again before the Festival, but their claims are solid. The yard also has veteran defending champ Sire Du Berlais, who cannot be dismissed despite his age.

French Champion Hurdle hero Theleme is an unknown quantity on these shores, but injury rules out a cross-Channel raid from him. Plans with Impaire Et Passe are up in the air somewhat at the time of writing, so Mullins could rely on Sir Gerhard instead. Injury-prone Blazing Khal has back course form that proves he acts around Cheltenham.

The suspicion is Noble Yeats is merely using the Stayers’ Hurdle as prep for the Grand National, meanwhile. An otherwise geriatric British challenge falls on the shoulders of Fergal O’Brien trained Long Walk hero Crambo, who picked up beloved veteran Paisley Park at Ascot. Neither he nor Champ are getting any younger.

Verdict: Hedge your bets and back both of Elliott’s up-and-coming Robcour pair Teahupoo and Irish Point.

Dawn Run Mares’ Novices’ Hurdle

Round off Cheltenham tips for day 3 is a division that always requires tipsters and punters to balance future potential progress with proven form in the book. Mullins will no doubt have multiple runners with Jade De Grugy the pick of those, according to the ante post markets, after her Solerina success at Fairyhouse. Fun Fun Fun may be better than her Listed defeat shows, meanwhile, as a final flight mistake was one she simply couldn’t recover from.

McManus has a strong hand courtesy of Gordon Elliott’s Down Royal Grade 3 winner Brighterdaysahead and Birdie Or Bust. The latter profited from the race-costing error made by Fun Fun Fun for Henry De Bromhead. There’s a suspicion that Jessica Harrington’s Jetara is better over further, however.

Leading British contenders, meanwhile, include Dysart Enos from the Fergal O’Brien stable who has a Cheltenham win to her name. Henderson has Epatante’s sister Joyeuse with an eye on this race. Queens Gamble could use her bumper background to good effect if this strongly run as expected for burgeoning trainer Harry Derham.

Cheltenham Day 4 Tips – Gold Cup Day

Cheltenham Tips

Cheltenham Gold Cup tips dominate on the final day of the Festival and why not. This is the blue riband event of steeplechasing, supported by two more Grade 1s on the card. Those are the Triumph Hurdle for the top four-year-olds over the smaller obstacles and Albert Bartlett Novices’ Hurdle for stayers. The Cheltenham Festival’s newest race, a two-and-a-half mile Mares’ Chase is also part of the Gold Cup day celebrations, alongside a hunter chase, a big field Premier Handicap in the County Hurdle and a conditional jockeys’ handicap hurdle.

Gold Cup Day Races

  • JCB Triumph Hurdle (Grade 1)
  • County Handicap Hurdle (Premier Handicap)
  • Albert Bartlett Novices’ Hurdle (Grade 1)
  • Cheltenham Gold Cup (Grade 1)
  • Festival Open Hunters’ Chase (Class 2)
  • Mrs Paddy Power Mares Chase (Grade 2)
  • Martin Pipe Conditional Jockeys’ Handicap Hurdle (Class 2)

JCB Triumph Hurdle

Any Cheltenham tips for day 4 naturally begin with the Triumph Hurdle and a division that only really takes proper shake from the end of January. Burdett Road and Sir Gino are leading British hopes at this stage, but the Irish have largely farmed this since Defi Du Seuil carried all juvenile hurdlers before him. It make sense to focus on the Emerald Isle.

Storm Heart and Kargese have been the most impressive Mullins mounts seen so far. They finished 1-2 in the Spring Juvenile Hurdle at Leopardstown’s Dublin Racing Festival. Gary Moore has a good eye for talent in this division, so his Chepstow Grade 2 scorer Salver and new recruit Peking Opera are worth a closer look.

Albert Bartlett Novices’ Hurdle

Often as murky picture wise as the Triumph, giving early Cheltenham Friday tips on the Albert Bartlett often requires tipsters to second guess. Readin Tommy Wrong can easily go for the Baring Bingham rather than this event at this stage. Mullins has an alternative to both him and Ballyburn, however, in the shape of High Class Hero.

Workmanlike when winning a race at Thurles which has produced some talented horses, there is more to come. Captain Teague and Gidleigh Park, who both have Baring Bingham entries, may end up here as well for the home team. It’s one in-behind the former at Newbury, however, in Johnnywho that looks each way value.

Don’t forget about course and distance trial winner Shanagh Bob either. Many others from both the UK and Ireland will throw their hats into the ring as we get nearer to the Festival, but stamina looks more essential than ever based on the early betting.

Cheltenham Gold Cup

What concerns everyone most is the Gold Cup tips with it being the showpiece race of the whole Festival. Last year’s winner Galopin Des Champs is the obvious place to start. He has won on both of his completed efforts at Cheltenham. Punchestown conqueror Fastorslow is the major challenge, but the pair haven’t clashed over this extended 3m 2f yet.

Gerri Colombe shaped like this trip would suit him when runner-up in the Broadway / Brown Advisory 12 months ago, but has been firmly put in his place by Galopin Des Champs since. It is hard to see the Cheltenham Gold Cup winner not coming from outside of these three at this stage.

Leading British contenders such as Shishkin, who hasn’t completed a race this season yet, and L’Homme Presse have points to prove. Shock King George scorer Hewick must atone for falling when headed in this race last year. Gentlemansgame remains the dark horse being prepared at home after beating Bravemansgame at Wetherby.

VerdictGalopin Des Champs and Fastorslow are the pair to concentrate on. Gerri Colombe could yet catapult himself back into contention, but does have something to find on the market principals. The rest are seemingly playing for third place at best.

Festival Hunter Chase

Last year’s winner Premier Magic looks sure to be primed for a defence of his title after winning three subsequent start for trainer-jockey Bradley Gibbs. Billaway is a standing dish the Festival Hunter Chase after two seconds and a first, and often comes on for his reappearance run for father-son team Willie and Patrick Mullins.

JP McManus purchased leading contender It’s On The Line despite the fact he only just scrambled home from Billaway at Naas the last day. Prior to that, Emmet Mullins’ charge beat the David Christie runner Fern’s Lock in his own backyard at Down Royal in Northern Ireland.

If one of the first four in the betting don’t make the frame, then Festival veterans like Samcro and Shantou Flyer look  sure to have their supporters. Cheltenham tips given by experts here have to decide between younger, improving types or proven form of their elders.

Mrs Paddy Power Mares’ Chase

McManus probably has this sewn up once again. Following successes for Elimay and Impervious, Cheltenham tips and the betting focus on Dinoblue, who has improved no end this season from out of handicaps last term. With her significant progress, she will take all the beating for Mullins.

Limerick Lace has already beaten the best British mares for Gavin Cromwell, meanwhile, and is thus second-favourite for this. Outside of the McManus pair, there are concerns over Allegorie De Vassy and Riviere D’Etel, as neither has acted that well at Cheltenham. The former has a nasty habit of jumping right, while the latter struggled for fluency full stop. Of the remainder, Nicky Henderson novice Arclight is improving all the time but this demands plenty more.

Verdict: If Dinoblue runs here and not in the Champion Chase, then it is her race to lose on ratings.

Cheltenham April Meeting Tips – Silver Trophy & Mares Only Card

There’s one more meeting to note after the Festival before the core jumps season ends at Cheltenham. That is the two-day April Meeting which coincides with the Craven at Newmarket on the Flat. National Hunt trainers still focus on the action at Prestbury Park, though, with the Grade 2 Silver Trophy headlining events on the Wednesday.

Thursday’s card is entirely made up of mares only races. Our experts can’t ignore the April Meeting when they give Cheltenham tips from this fixture. These are some of their fancies to note:

Kingston Stud Handicap Hurdle Tips

Kamsinas E/W, Kingston Stud Handicap Hurdle, Cheltenham (17 April, 2:05)

Grade 2 winner Kamsinas could be very well-treated now sent handicapping on better ground for the first time in the extended 2m 4f Kingston Stud Handicap Hurdle at Cheltenham on the opening day of the April Meeting. One of two in the race trained locally to the course by Fergal O’Brien, this seven-year-old son of Kamsin bounced back to winning ways on a better surface last time out.

Midwinter ground and testing going didn’t seem to suit Kamsimas, but judged on how he shaped when runner-up here in the autumn and when scoring at Haydock, he’s worth another chance in handicaps. Paddy Brennan has picked him over the mare Peking Rose, which may be a tip in itself. Kamsinsa is an each way bet for sure.

Titan Discovery Has Big Performance in Him

In-form handler Robbie Llewellyn is a very shrewd trainer, so the consistent Titan Discovery commands respect on his Cheltenham debut. This six-year-old Pether’s Moon gelding ran an eye-catching third at Kempton when hampered a key stage and finishing strongly when last in action.

Titan Discovery was also home in front of subsequent Aintree Premier Handicap heroine Kateira that day. Nudged up just 3lb by the assessor for a half-length defeat, Titan Discovery certainly has more in him. Earlier wins around Ascot and Sandown show he handles more galloping tracks, so he’s another each way punt for the shortlist.

Spring Note Respected for Top Yard

Nicky Henderson got his Seven Barrows stables firing again at the Grand National Festival last week, so progressive mare Spring Note is one to note in the spring like her name suggests. This six-year-old daughter of Mahler has won her last three at Newbury, including two this season and now goes back up in distance.

The handicapper has increased Spring Note half-a-stone for her two-length defeat of subsequent dual scorer and now 145-rated Brentford Hope. As the runner-up has advertised the form in spades by landing events at Newcastle and Haydock, there’s every chance she may have more to offer here. Although not missed by the market, it’s easy to see why Spring Note is favourite under James Bowen.

Windtothelightning Capable of Better

After finishing a close third at this meeting last year, Windtothelightning is perhaps better than she showed when fourth in a very messy mares only race again over course and distance in December. Representing the Oliver Greenall & Josh Guerriero training partnership, this six-year-old by Sans Frontieres is now 1lb lower than her latest visit to Cheltenham.

Windtothelightning relished sounder surfaces when notching a hat-trick last year before coming here. She’s a stone higher than her placed effort 12 months ago, but routed her rivals at Wetherby on reappearance. With bookmakers paying up to five places on this competitive handicap, Windtothelightning could well get in amongst those again.

Our 2024 Silver Trophy Handicap Chase Tips

Il Ridoto E/W, Silver Trophy Handicap Chase, Cheltenham (17 April, 2:40)

From the same mark that he just lost out on December Gold Cup glory off of, Cheltenham standing dish Il Ridoto looks a solid each way bet to land the Grade 2 Silver Trophy their on day one of the April Meeting. Trained by Paul Nicholls, the seven-year-old Kapgarde gelding has three placed efforts from five starts at the track this season.

In other words, Il Ridoto is often there or thereabouts and certainly has less on his plate here than in the Paddy Power Gold Cup when third, at the December Meeting, on Trials Day or in the Festival Plate. Only Fugitif chinned him on the line cost him here before Christmas. Il Ridoto can make amends and land this under Harry Cobden.

In Excelsis Deo an Obvious Danger

The real eyecatcher in the Plate at last month’s Cheltenham Festival was the fifth home, In Excelsis Deo. Trained by Harry Fry for JP McManus, this six-year-old son of Saddex stayed on strongest of all from the rear of the field. It looks very much like In Excelsis Deo was given too much to do by regular jockey Jonny Burke,

An unchanged mark is a plus and he’s another that has been knocking on the door in Cheltenham handicaps throughout the campaign. It is just a matter of how fluently In Excelsis Deo jumps on his way round. He is certainly the right favourite, but needs to prove he can lie up with the pace and not make so many mistakes.

In-Form Scarface Also Shortlisted

Joe Tizzard again turns out the Sussex Champion Chase hero Scarface on the upgrade. This seven-year-old Milan gelding won the Premier Handicap for novices that used to be part of the Cheltenham Festival, but was moved to Sandown to accommodate the Mares’ Chase. Scarface arrives here seeking the hat-trick.

Although 6lb higher in the weights from Plumpton, he has really learned on the job and improved in the jumping department. That Sandown success suggests Scarface handles more testing and undulating tracks with an uphill finish. It augurs well for this assignment. Scarface is thus another solid each way alternative to the favourite here.

Gemirande Overpriced on Last Year’s Run

At bigger odds, the Silver Trophy third from 12 months ago in Gemirande is back for another crack at the race off 4lb lower. Trained by Venetia Williams in silks made famous by Cepage around here, this eight-year-old son of Al Namix was only beaten by four lengths last term.

Fifth placed efforts in the Greatwood Gold Cup and Grand Annual aren’t quite as good as the results records en route to this last year. Even a strongly run two miles is sharp of what Gemirande wants and he may now be spot on after those outings, his first of the campaign, last month. The only negative is the stable’s form. Despite that, Gemirande looks another value each way play with some firms paying four places.

How To Take Advantage Of Ante-Post Betting at Cheltenham

Ante post betting on Cheltenham involves wagering on runners before race lineups have been confirmed. This is a popular method of Cheltenham betting for many. However, it is worth placing such bets with bookies offering Cheltenham Non Runner No Bet offers. Just because odds are available, doesn’t mean that the horse will actually ultimately feature in the race. So, knowing that you will get your stake refunded in this event is nice to know. The following tips will also help punters take best advantage of ante post Cheltenham Festival markets:

  • Remember that those placing ante post bets on Cheltenham will likely be ineligible for best odds guaranteed. This promotion is offered by many bookies. However, with an ante post bet, the price is set in stone in most cases.
  • Consider the each way odds before placing ante post bets. For example, some bookies will pay out at odds of ¼ for placed finishers, while others will pay out at ⅕.
  • Place ante post bets as soon as possible. The odds on such markets rarely get more appealing as the Festival draws closer. So, as soon as ante post Cheltenham markets become available, strike!

How to Make the Most of Tote Betting at Cheltenham

Tote betting is different to traditional fixed odds gambling. Here, each bet placed on a particular market adds up to create the pool. All winning punters are then paid from this pool. This method of betting is hugely popular with horse racing, the Cheltenham Festival in particular. But just how can you best take advantage of tote betting at Cheltenham?

Cheltenham Tips

A number of tote bet markets are available surrounding the Cheltenham Festival. Totewin, Toteplace, Toteexacta and Totetrifecta are among the most popular. Be sure to sign up with a bookie that has a good reputation for tote betting. The likes of Paddy Power and Betfair excel here. Remember that backing an overwhelming SP favourite, something that millions of others will potentially bet on, will not result in great returns. So, look at each-way alternatives, especially on some of the less high profile Cheltenham races.

Meanwhile, in order to win a Tote placepot, there are a number of additional factors to consider. It is worth backing a few horses in each race. Going with just one in each race is unrealistic, to say the least. Meanwhile, while it is nice to think that you can pick a 50/1 surprise winner, betting on outsiders is not the way to go here.

How to Spot the Best Outsiders at Cheltenham

Many punters dream of backing the next Norton’s Coin, who won the 1990 Cheltenham Gold Cup, despite being priced at 100/1. However, doing so is far more difficult in reality. Facile Vega, Constitution Hill, Energumene, Delta Work, Allaho, Lossiemouth and Galopin Des Champs are among the short-priced runners expected to feature at Cheltenham this year. However, it is almost certain that there will be a surprise winner or two over the four days.

The first factor to consider is the trainer in question. Irish duo Willie Mullins and Gordon Elliott are certain to have a whole host of winners at Cheltenham once again. However, it is always worth looking at some of their less fancied runners. In 2019, Mullins’ 50/1 Eglantine Du Seuil won the Mares’ Novices’ Hurdle. If the going is good or good to soft, then there could well be similar upsets this time around. Horses associated with trainers such as Nicky Henderson, Henry De Bromhead, Dan Skelton, Paul Nichols and Jessica Harrington are also well worth keeping an eye out for.

Meanwhile, looking at the recent form and past horse racing results of entrants is another good tactic. Especially in less high profile Cheltenham races, consider backing horses that, despite having come close on several occasions, are still on the hunt for their first win. Many runners have made a name for themselves in the biggest races in the past.

Mistakes to Avoid

When betting on the Cheltenham Festival, many are guilty of falling into a trap that will ultimately see them lose money. So, before placing your first bet on the event this year, make sure that you are aware of these common mistakes:

Don’t Bet on All Races

With 28 races making up the Cheltenham Festival, there is an almost constant stream of horse racing action to look forward to. However, we advise punters to avoid betting on each and every race. Even the betting customers with an expert knowledge of the sport will struggle to place successful wagers across the board. So, target selected races instead, focusing on runners and riders you are familiar with.

Don’t Bet With Your Heart

For horse racing enthusiasts, it is likely that you regularly follow the progress of particular runners and riders. However, remember that there is no room for sentiment when it comes to Cheltenham betting. So, bet with your head, rather than your heart. Punt on horses that you think will win, rather than those that you hope will win.

Learn from Past Errors

If you have bet on the Cheltenham Festival in previous years, then you will likely have an understanding of what mistakes to avoid this time around. So, draw on past experiences when wagering on races in 2022.

Avoid Overloading on Tips

With Cheltenham tips being available on many platforms offering horse racing tips today, it is easy to confuse yourself by reading too many. Stick to respected tipsters. Look at their track record, as well as what experience they have within the horse racing industry.

Ultimate 5 Hot Tips for Cheltenham

Regardless of whether you follow Cheltenham tips or not, there are some key tips when betting on the Festival. Again, these do not guarantee profits. However, they will put punters in the right frame of mind to beat the bookies:

Do Your Own Research

Cheltenham tips should deliver all of the information surrounding races that you need. However, it is still worth carrying out your own research into competing runners and riders. There is no shortage of information available online today. With horse racing being one of the most popular sports to bet on in the UK, many bookies provide useful pre-race details.

Monitor the Odds

Cheltenham Festival odds are introduced months in advance by most bookies. As such, prices change on a regular basis. It is up to punters to work out when is the best time to back their favourite. Meanwhile, some online bookies offer best odds guaranteed. This promotion is very helpful.

Set a Budget

Regardless of your objectives, it is vital to set a budget for your Cheltenham Festival betting. Remembering that entertainment is the no.1 reason to wager on the event, your budget should be a small proportion of your disposable income. Either set yourself a budget for each day or the Festival as a whole. Stick to your budget, no matter how appealing a potential bet appears. You may also want to check out Cheltenham free bets.

Watch Races Live

There is nothing quite like watching races from the Cheltenham Festival live. Races are generally packed with action, while the competitive nature of the event makes for a fascinating spectacle. Selected online bookies stream Cheltenham races. Those watching may even gain an insight into how upcoming races will pan out.

Consider Outsiders

With some Cheltenham Festival races, there can be an overwhelming favourite. However, whether it be with a win or each way bet, it can often be worth backing an outsider instead. With this horse racing betting event being known for its shocks, you could well be pleasantly surprised.
