Nugent was primed for big things when he moved from Preston to Portsmouth in the summer of 2007, but he only made eight starts (with three goals) last season and has made a single appearance this season. But, the Huyton native and former Liverpool trainee could get his career back on track with a Merseyside move.
Everton are in desperate need of at least one new striker, as Yakubu is out for the season and Louis Saha and James Vaughan are both out for extended periods of time. David Moyes has to focus on low-cost solutions, and that’s why Henrik Larsson is reportedly top of his list, but Nugent appears to be an inexpensive backup option if that deal doesn’t happen.
It doesn’t seem likely that Tony Adams would object to Nugent leaving on loan or permanently, and my thought would be that Everton might look for a loan-first, buy later deal. However, if Pompey are only looking to do a permanent deal, Nugent would be available for a relatively cheap price of £3m.
